In the m1530 user manual http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...EA/RU3451D.zip the m1530 has ddr3 but uses the geforce 8600 gs. On dell's website it says you can get the 8600 gt. I'm confused.

Video type 1: discrete video card
    Data bus PCI Express X16
Video controller nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Video memory 128 MB DDR3 technology
LCD interface Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS)
TV support HDMI mode and S-video
Video type 2: discrete video card
    Data bus PCI Express X16
Video controller nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
Video memory 256 MB DDR3 technology
    LCD interface LVDS
TV support HDMI mode and S-video

So far, from what we've gathered here's the facts:

    1. The m1530 uses a DDR2 8600m GT.
    2. Dell is retarded and writes and tells customers random things.

    quick question, would a 8600 gs ddr3 be better than a 8600 gt ddr2?

No it wouldn't - but it is very close. With my 8600GS, I've been getting 3dmark06 scores of 2700 with default drivers. With laptopsvideo2go drivers, it should be touching 2900 - very, very similiar to the 8600GT DDR2.
I've seen scores of upto 4100 with an overclocked 8600GS DDR3 on recent Vaio's.

Then again, 3dmark06 is said to pretty crap. However, the 8600GS (proper DDR3 version) is a lot closer to the 8600GT DDR2, than people actually think.

^If you put the 8600m GS DDR3 against the 8600m GT DDR2 in a shader intensive game such a FEAR, the difference will show. (Saying the 8600m GT would have the hand up despite slower clocks).

It seems highly doubtful the M1530 would be DDR2. What would be the point?

Most if not all offered on the japan site 1530 was identical to the US sites.
    I vote yes on DDR3

The point? For Dell to save money...meaning bigger profits.

Even with the cheaper price you get when going with Dell, my personal opinion (and experience) is you get less than what you pay for.

On the outside it looks like a good deal, but if you have ever owned a high quality machine before (go Toshiba! ;P), and you get a Dell, you will immediately feel the difference.

Dell = On the cheap computing for those who absolutely can't afford better (IMO)

    Just be careful :)

No, I seriously doubt the M1530 would do very well at all if it had only a DDR2 card. It would have just too much competition at lower prices, from Dell itself even.

That is true...but I wonder how much of a difference DDR2 and DDR3 is to the mainstream consumer. It may not make a difference to 90% of the consumers.

It will to those buying that machine. Dell learned that when the 1520 was released. I'm guessing that's why they said the 1530 would be clocked higher than the 1520's card was.

Dell themselves says the 1530 will make the macbook pro run for its money, the macbook pro has the DDR3 memory....

The Dell AU configuration page lists the 8600GT w/DDR3 as well.

I don't know if this can help or not (if not correct me):
Regardless of the statement DDR3, if the label is not GDDR3 (not DDR3), then it is DDR2, and that can be checked with the Riva Tuner utility.

I remember when the Dell 1520 was released here in the UK, it said on the specs pages (and customisation page), 8600GT DDR3 - when in the end, its actually DDR2 .
I assume tha same mistake with the m1530.

Well, not with Rivatuner, as that reports incorrectly for mobile graphics cards. But the clock speeds can be checked, and Everest is usually fairly accurate as well.

And Dell presumably learned from that mistake, as they later corrected it, and several of the statements they've made regarding the 1530 imply that this will be GDDR3 as opposed to the DDR2 1520.
