I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the Dell forum...I'm hoping for some input from people who are playing (or have played) Crysis Warhead on their m1710...
I have an m1710 w/ 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo and 7950 GTX...I'm running XP Service Pack 2...I'm using the Dell approved 174.31 driver for the nVidia card and the non-approved (but WHQL approved and Dell approved for other computers) 4823 Sigmatel driver...
Crysis (not Warhead) plays fine at 1280x720 with most settings at the Warhead equivalent of Mainstream and a couple at Gamer...the intro movie jerks as the transport plane first flies on the screen and when Jester first talks to Nomad in the cargo bay, but gameplay (to me) is relatively smooth...
Using the same settings on Warhead (which is supposedly optimized), gameplay is smooth EXCEPT, periodically, the sound stutters (and tree leaves and bushes disappear/reappear but this isn't as bothersome as the stuttering)...particularly when lots of radio chatter is going on...
I play both games from an external hard drive, and I did install Warhead to the internal drive to eliminate the sound problem, but the stuttering persisted...
I did some research and messed around with texture streaming (turned if off '0', and then tried '1' and '2'), pre-caching the levels, and customizing the sound profile with 8 decoders (by the way, does anybody know how many decoders the m1710 onboard Sigmatel audio chip actually has?) and sound cache to 50 (don't know the units...I assume MB) and 200...nothing really affected the stuttering...I don't think it's tied to texture performance now...so I went back to just using the stock options of Mainstream and Gamer in the Setup menu for Warhead...
I really think it has to do with the Sigmatel chip...
Has anyone with an m1710 played Warhead without the sound stuttering? Do you have a config (autoexec) file that you would be willing to share? Or what settings did you use?
And yes, I know that Crysis and Warhead are very demanding, but as I mentioned, Crysis plays fine...decent fps at my chosen settings with no stuttering...not sure what's going on with Warhead...
Thanks for the help

please use this autoexec.
it is CCC 2.21 lvl5: it should run super smooth on your computer at any resolution.

I'll try it (I assume I'll just paste that into the autoexec file over my current settings, and specify the resolution and set multi-gpu to off or '0' and speakers to '2'), and let you know how it worked...thank you...
Has anyone with an m1710 or onboard Sigmatel audio had the stuttering problem with Crysis: Warhead? -
ALso, update your drivers to ATLEAST past 175series, but better yet 180.70 or 180.84 and get the modified .inf as well. The 175 series and higher have shader opimisations that REALLY help in games such as Crysis/Warhead. Also try going in to your nVidia game profiles and change the pre-rendered frames to less than 3, 1-2 is good for your card.
Good Luck. -
Yes assuming that it is like an nVidia 8700m gts then it should do well with these settings. If you want i can always upload lvl4 for you if that one lags a bit.
-
I do have the pre-rendered frames set to 3 though (I think that's the default)...I'll set that back to 2 and check it out...thanks for the tip...
-
Sound stuttering gone...and graphic quality was way better than what I had set up...
FPS were just a little bit low (I would guess ~20-25 fps...I never monitor fps which keeps my OCD from forever chasing one exta fps...I just find settings that I think are playable/enjoyable)...
If you have the Level 4 readily available, it would be much appreciated...
And thanks again...not only did it fix the sound stuttering, but it also fixed textures (primarily vegetation) from popping in and out which was distracting... -

thats lvl 4 should make it about 30fps. -
Worked like a champ...easily 30+ fps...no stuttering...and minimal magic disappearing/reappearing vegetation...
Periodically, there's about a second pause as new textures are loaded, but the autoexec works great...
I re-enabled texture streaming (last cvar) due to two crashes in a row and haven't had a crash since...
Thanks so much for the help...great work...
Do you know if this autoexec will work with Crysis? I think I read somewhere that all the cvars are the same between the two games...thanks again... -
if you want to install it in Crysis then install CCC 2.21. You can find it in on incrysis forums. It comes with this autoexec and you can install the TOD (the day and night cycles look better)in the game.
-
im confused, i dont see a file to install. anyone PM with more instructions on how to get this installed, im using nvidias 179.25 drivers.
-
1) Open a Windows-based text editor (I used Notepad)
2) Copy (highlight text in the post starting with ;[~]Cuban-Ultima-Doom-Arch-Assassin47-Taowolf-Sword's Custom Crysis Configs [CCC] v2.21[~] and ending with r_TexturesStreaming = 0 and CTRL+C) and Paste (click in Notepad and CTRL+V)
3) Save the file as autoexec.cfg (do NOT save as autoexec.txt) in your Crysis or Crysis: Warhead installation directory
That's it...
The first post w/ all the funny text commands (cvars in Crysis speak) is for higher end graphics cards (8800s, 9800s)...
The next post w/ all the cvars is for yesteryear's cards or higher resolutions...it's the one I use with my 7950 GTX at 1280x720...
When you click 'Save' from the Notepad 'File' menu...just type autoexec.cfg in the dialog box and then browse to the installation directory...
You can subsequently re-open the file in Notepad and change various cvars for your specific card and driver performance...look up Crysis cvars on Google and you'll find various websites (one with an Excel spreadsheet) that explain the various cvars...
Good luck...
PS. The ; at the beginning of a line designates a Remark (REM from the days when we wrote the autoexec.bat and config.sys vs the Windows OS) and the program ignores the line when loading the variables. You can use this to troubleshoot the autoexec.cfg file you just created by selectively REM and un-REMing lines with the ;. -
I have a Rock notebook with a Go 7950 GTX, is that not the same card IWantMyMTV has in his Dell?
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks. -
Check your resolution
Make sure it is the same as IWantMyMTV's
Hope this helps -
I'm pretty sure I've tried running it at a lower res. than IWantMyMTV's, I'll double check when I get home.
Cheers. -
Let us know once you've checked
-
Yeah, even if I run at a low res like 960x600 I only get 10ish fps
I've tried changing a few of the shader settings and I now get between 15-20 fps, what other settings should I be looking to change to speed things up?
One good piece of news is the sound stutter has gone
But in comparison to IWantMyMTV's 30fps shouldn't my Go 7950 GTX be performing a little better than this?
Thanks! -
It's the same card...not all OEMs set the cards up the same...based on the thermal design of your notebook, Rock may limit your GPU clocks...don't know...
You're running at 960x600 and you've changed some of the shader settings from the level 4 autoexec.cfg, and you're still getting 15-20 fps?
It may also depend on where you're playing...and my 30 fps isn't an official 2-minute bookmark...it's an impression playing an early level (after the beach when you're on your way to rescue the pilot, and you have to get out of the truck to help the squad stuck on the left)...fairly good amount of enemies there...but you may be measuring your fps at a place that is much more graphically intensive...
I would think you would be able to do a little better with level 4 at 960x600, but we may not be comparing apples to apples... -
Thanks for your reply.
Thanks again. -
Just ran FRAPS instead of guessing...I had a minimum of 4, maximum of 32 and average of 22 for the first 60 second run (started the 60 second run as soon as I jumped out of the plane)...I had a minimum of 5, maximum of 34 and average of 24 for the next 60 second run (break the box, jump and knock out the first three enemies)...
And peak CPU temp was 60 C with peak GPU temp at 85 C...
Sorry about the delay...power went out last night...(lost the cable modem)...Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015
