my m860tu e8335/fx3700 has an issue with the HDD and vid card overheating while playing TOR.... I can play other games(oblivion, BC2, etc) for HRS without issue(temps in the high 80s) but when I play TOR after 1-2hrs the vid card hits 100+ and the HDD is in the 70s. :(

I can minimize the game for 2 min and temps drop back down in the 50s...

It already sits on an elevated platform with holes(used to be a CRT stand) and is cleaned/re-pasted regularly.

    What are my options?

Zalman NC2000 cooling pad is always a solid recommendation for most laptops.

    Get a desktop :D

Seriously you spend all that money on a laptop for it to overheat, just doesn't seem logical.

The other alternative would be opening it up and cleaning the fans etc of any dust and replacing the TIM on the GPU.

    How much is regularly

If you are seriously having such problems with temps despite reapplying paste...

these readings are what you should be watching out for.
your hard drive is way over and hits danger level at 60c
when you say 100+ and 70s what was the actual readings as 1-2c makes all the difference when you are up that high.
are you running HW Monitor to get your readings?

i have no idea what it could be. maybe repasting wasnt done properly but then of course that wouldnt affect the hard drive.

have you got the Intel Matrix Storage Manager loaded as this can bring hard drive temps down by 3-5c.
you will have to search for the right one as our lappys are 3 years old now and im not sure if the latest one will work.

    good luck

It could be that he has a bugged out Nvidia driver that makes the GPU overheat for no reason.
Its happened before so its not a unlikely scenario.

SW:TOR should not even stress the system that much compared to Bad Company 2.

Actually The Old Republic is surprisingly more stressful, BFBC2 has my fans on near silent most of the time while TOR ramps them way up, I think it has to do with the larger game world and more frequent hard drive access. I'd recommend an updated Nvidia driver, clear out dust, check processor temps as well, then consider putting your fans on max speed by hitting fn+1 while gaming. If temps are still getting high then you may not have repasted well

Neither does posting a comment about a Desktop in a Laptop forum.

the fn+1doesn't work on the m860tu, I think it was first used on the next line.

Re-pasting/cleaning was the first thing I tried, but temps in other games were 1-2* of what they normally were.

Then I decided to get some antec diamond paste(the $15 tube at staples) it dropped my max temp by 5-6*. it still gets 90*+ but it is manageable...

Nope wasn't suggested anywhere. I notice you know how to solder so you may consider modding in a switch to override the fan control wire and force it to run full speed that way to see if it helps. Depending on if you have room in the case maybe add a small fan to suck heat away from the hard drive as well

True to some what, but I ended with a positive comment in an attempt to help his situation, unlike your comment which holds no relevance to his problem whatsoever.
