Best way to narrow it down is to try the LowFX option and reduce everything, see if it's still getting FPS chokes, that way you know if it's the video just not working well with the 980m/driver setup you have, or if it's some log file of some kind being all sluggish

Also listing what laptop you have would help narrow out any issues with optimus

He did mention his laptop (MSI GT72)

Could be anything from driver issue, throttling, overheating etc...
Is the 980m in the GT72 BGA? Can you even repaste those?

Oh good call, totally missed that

I know D3 can be demanding during a 4man grift where there's a quadbillion effects and damage # calculations going on, but a 980m should have no problem clearing the demands at 60fps+. My 880m can run it at 120fps without a problem, unless it's like 50+ mobs.

In that case, I would still suggest lowering effects and running the LowFX checkmark in video settings, as well as running GPU-Z before starting your rift, then if you still dip to 20fps, tab to GPU-Z and check the temperature. If you don't dip at all, turn up one thing at a time, unchecking LowFX first. I'd do shadows last
