I am looking at new notebooks and was wondering the impact of total graphics memory vs the quality of the card. I don't do a lot of high level gaming, but would like the option to run HL2 etc. My question is whether a card like the Nvidia® GeForce FX Go5200 graphics with 64MB would perform better than a ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600 with 256MB? I understand the ATI cards can have lower functionality, but would the addition of added memory make up the difference?

Um, yeah, the x600 would be a better card even if it were only a 64MB card...the GeForce Go5200 is actually a fairly terrible card. I'm relatively certain my Mobility RADEON 9600 64MB outperforms it easily (admittedly, I've done a bit of overclocking).
I have a GeForce FX5700Le 256MB in my parents desktop, and it would barely outperform my Gateway if that computer had the same amount of RAM and the same processor. The core on the GeForce has a clock speed about 200MHz slower than the current clock in my Gateway, and yet the GF has overheating issues.

Gateway 7422GX: AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 1024MB DDR RAM, 64MB Mobility RADEON 9600
AVERATEC AV3270-EH1: AMD Mobile Sempron 2800+, 512MB DRR RAM, 64MB (shared) S3G Unichrome -
The ATI MR X600 is a much better card.
Dell I6000 -
Overall i think what the card is is more imporant. the x600 64 mb performs much better than the x300 128 mb.
memory vs graphics card type
