    mobile graphics card question

    greetings graphics enthusiasts; pardon the intrusion here with a non-gaming GPU question, but please hear me out before the yawns gets too big :D I'm spec'ing out a zbook G4 and budget calls for a decision between a 4GB Nividia M2200, and a 6GB P3000. I've seen the benchmarks, I get that one is Maxwell and the other Pascal, I know that the P3000 is significantly stronger, even though intended for engineering work and not optimized for gaming -- but I'm hoping someone here can boil down the practical differences into application-specific or behavioral terms: If I shell out the $400-ish extra for the P3000, what could I do that I couldn't with the M2200? What will run well on the P3000 that would struggle on the M2200?

    my primary use is photo and video editing/playback. Beyond this, what graphics horizons would the P3000 open up? BTW this is a 17" 4K dreamcolor machine, a 45 watt i7 7820HQ, 16GB RAM, 2x7200rpm 1TB with a 512GB z turbo drive for the OS

    Ill try to answer this question to the best of my ability. First of all, Maxwell is older and Pascal is much newer. The newer Pascal architecture was a massive improvement in performance, nearly doubling performance numbers for one specific GPU of last gen, to the same specific model to the next gen. Now the M2200 is really a lower end GPU already, so its sower even if it was of the same architecture or generation. The P3000 is leagues ahead of the M2200.

    The M4000 was a high end GPU for Maxwell professional work. The P4000 nearly doubled this GPU while using less power and running much faster.

    If you can afford it, I would get the P3000.. The P3000 will also run any of the latest games at 1080P with ultra detail! Just like a GTX1060!

    P3000, and P4000 are a pretty good value! Its tough to swallow the price stepping up to a P5000 though.

    My school loans were going to pay some of the cost of my laptop, and a significant portion of the cost of a p5000 if I built a laptop with one. Though, I really didn't need the certified drivers. And I can get most of my work done with a GTX1070 which is already overkill as it is.
