hi, im going to be OC'ing my gpu and i was wondering the best way to judge if it can handle the settings i put it. i know im supposed to look for artifacing and quality of image but what is the best way to do this.. certain games? movies? 3dmark06?

oh and i was also wondering - how do i disable the OCing when you don't want it to be active in RIVATUNER? will it automatically go back to stock settings?

anyone have any answers for me? ;\

am i correct in thinking that if i run 3dmark06 after oc'ing i will be able to tell if im pushin the clocks too high?

You are partially correct with that "concept", 3Dmark is only basic test for stability, it is there so if you push the card too hard, you will notice immediately since the program will obviously crash. For example, I have had OC clocks work 100% with 3Dmark06 loops 16 times of every test then proceed to crash 10 minutes in the real game. So the best way to test stability is to play some graphically demanding game.

Remember to monitor the GPU temperature. There has been many threads on overclocking and temperature monitoring recently, so look at them. Basically you should pay attention if the GPU temp goes above 85°C, you don't want to jeopardize the life of your system.

Use ATI Tool to scan for artifact, i can run 3dmark 06 witout problems while ATI tool can detect artifact

ATI Tool is the best. Run the artifact scan for 20 minutes, if nothing catches, bump it up 10MHz.

ATI Tool actually has a great feature than allows you to test how stable your overclock is. However, neither app will work with all driver versions. I use nTune to do the actual overclocking and use ATI Tool to verify the stability afterwards. I bump up the clocks 10MHz and run the ATI artifact test for 3 minutes. Once I reach the max overclock, I dial it down 5MHZ and Run ATI for 10 minutes until I don't get any artifacts. Then I run a final 20 minute test at the final clock settings just to make sure.

So yeah, ATI is the best diagnostic tool. nTune is the most capable overclocking software. Plus, fuzzy dice are just awesome

is it okay to have ATI tools and Rivatuner installed on your computer at the same time? and is ATI tools difficult to use? which version are you currently running of ATI tools?

what is the best way to go about this - i'd like to use one application for all my OCing but i dont know if thats the right way with the responses i've been getting - if it is okay to have both ati tools and rivatuner installed (as asked above can someone answer me?), should i OC with riva and then look at the performance on ati tools?

IM CONFUSED - SOMEONE HELP ME I MUST BE RETARDED

okay - ive been messin with rivatuner for a lil bit and im gettin the hang of it.

i just simply want to know if it is completely safe to have both ati tools and rivatuner installed at the same time - thus OCing with riva and checking for performance issues with ATI tools.. can someone tell me this?

    thanks you

It's fine to have both installed. You'll only be using one to actually overclock, the other is just a monitor.

okay i just installed ati tools and whenever i click on scan for artifacts it says -- the video card you have selected to for overclocking in atitool does not seem to be used by windows, visual testing has been disabled -- what does this mean??? does this mean that atitools does not support my graphics card?

    i have an 8700mGT btw

it appears as though everything i try to do with ati tools says that same message.. does this mean my card is not supported with ati tools? someone please respond
