I just got my brand new Toshiba today (see sig). I want to run 3dmark05 and 06 on it and was wondering what I should be adjusting in the msconfig window.

I have already uninstalled all the bloatware and defraged.

I don't want to have hardly any background programs running whenever I boot up my comp. I just want the barebones at startup. When I want to run a program I will initiate it for myself.

So could anyone give me a hand and let me know what things should be unchecked or basically what to do in msconfig to get my new rig in the optimal gaming/3dmark configuration?

Keep in mind I have Vista Premium....

    Thanks

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Just checkout that link... should provide some info.

Basically you should use your common sense when it comes to the startup items. My anti-virus (bitdefender) has a startup program that is called bdagent, which didn't show up in any startup program list. But you can tell that the BD must stand for something... so I made sure to leave that checked.

But remember that most startup programs only slow down your startup and then go on to use memory, which really shouldn't affect your 3dmark score too much, and you have 2gb of ram so you are fine.

If you really want to have optimal system configuration, just make sure to regularly defrag your harddrive (I do it after installing large apps, mainly games), scan for viruses and spyware, and if you want higher scores/gaming power, consider overclocking your card. I have a 7600 and overclock it occasionally to get more fps out of demanding games (like Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander), there should be some threads around talking abou this, you overclock it by enabling coolbits, just search gaming forums for coolbits.

I would not worry too much about it...but if you want to learn more about what various programs do at startup, you can just google them. For example, I found this site: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
It is for XP, but will probably work for most programs.

EDIT: Defragging is more noticeable if you do it after uninstalling stuff (rather than after installing)
