im looking for a good website that keeps track of what the hottest multiplayer games that the most people are playing on are... i just want a maybe list of games that is updated with the amount of people that are playing on it -- anyone know of such a site?

dont know if this will help. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/0

Well you could try the Gamespy stats. Some people claim that they are unreliable (they might count bots?) but I think in general they're a good resource.

figured it out, and wow, i was surprised... here are some official numbbers of people playing for popular games...
Game/Mod Players
Counter-Strike (cstrike) 112451
Call of Duty 4 (cod4) 31845
BattleField 2 (bf2) 19892
Team Fortress 2 (tf2) 8574
ET: Quake Wars (etqw) 1992
Crysis (crysis) 1448
Unreal Tournament 3 (ut3) 1079
im very surprised at looking at this that all three games i was considering buying (et,crysis,ut3) are all soooo low in player numbers (which i have been hearing people complaining about - lack of community) - BUT LOOK AT COD4! wow. its just odd that ut2004 is beating ut3 (by a very slim number) -
COD4 has a strong ad campaign behind it, and plenty of publisher muscle to get boxes on shelves. The problem is that COD4 isn't an on-line only game. It's a SP experience first, and a MP game second. Just like the original HL, unless COD4 gets modded into something else (like CS) then I can't see it having much longevity as a MP title. Those 32k people are just trying to get their moneys worth after completing the SP mission.
For me the real surprise here is UT3 and ET:QW. UT3 should be DOMINATING! (pun intended) but instead is just kind of limping along. I've played the demo and it was OK, but not the ground breaking title that 2k4 was. Quake Wars is brilliant IMO, but a steep leaning curve and lack of exposure mean it may never really take off.
TF2 is kind of a surprise too. Did that many more people buy COD4 than the Orange Box? I doubt it. I think that people are just infatuated with the "new" and that the TF2 (and UT & ET) players that COD4 siphoned off will return eventually.
That's my hope anyway. I'd hate to see COD4 turn into another CS. -

Team Fortress 2 is so much fun and so is Call of Duty 4, these are the two games that I have been playing almost exclusively.
TF2 is great to blow off some steam after some hardcore COD4 MP gaming.
