Ambient temperature and your specific machine play the biggest part in what your temps should be. If that's in a 22C room, I'd say it's alright.

my place is like 80F ... not sure what that translates to. I ran 3d vantage and it maxed at 87C. which I heard was fine so i guess im good.

80 is pretty hot, so I would expect a little above average idle temps. That said, if you just applied the Mx-4, then odds are it hasn't set up completely yet, so I would expect your temps to drop as you use the machine and "cure" the paste.

Question also presents itself whether the OP applied the paste correctly and in what kind of quantities.

If you are unsatisfied with the temps, then you could try repasting... this time, spread a thin layer of the paste on a chip's surface and that's it.

Though, I do think that 87 degrees C under load is ok for 6990m.
80 degrees C is not unusual for these gpu's.
Along the shoddy cooling being implemented in laptops as a whole, it's pretty good.

    80F translates to 26.6 C... so I think it's ok.

IMHO 48c in idle is insanely high, if you suppose that idle state triggers the lowest clocks possible (at least I think it works with AMD like all the other brands).
Probably the repaste hasn't been made correctly.
I want to know how you did it.
Remember that you need to clean accurately the gpu core with alcohol (rubbing alcohol is fine) at 90% so it cleans better and evaporates faster.
Once you cleaned accurately it with a lynth cloth (don't use standard paper) clean also the heatsink in the same way. Be sure there's no residue left.
Once you're ready put a pea sized blob in the center of the gpu core and screw back the heatsink in place paying attention that is positioned correctly.
Screw it back following the numbers engraved on the top starting from the higher number (4,3,2,1) doing half quarter circle each screw until they reach their end. Dont screw each at once otherwise you'll not get a perfectly leveled contact.
Hope it helps. IMHO you should idle around 40c at lower clocks.
But keep in mind that I have experience with nvidia cards only so take my advices with a grain of salt, with AMD based on what I read things could be different.

That sadly only applies to nvidia cards. Even on my M17x R3 it hovers around 50-53*c idle.

Ya i cleaned everything till all the silver was gone. I did the pea size thing spread a thin layer enough to be silver on the gpu. I spread using clear wrap (same time for food) around my finger and spread that way. saw it in a video
