my Titan quest gold review

ok guys here i am with another probably pointless review for you.

i recently brought TitanQuest gold edition which includes the expansion Immortal throne, after you have installed them both you can play both games from loading the expansion, the benefit to this is added weapons, master classes etc.



so first off this game is diablo2 (plays in the exact same manner) set in Greece, Egypt and Asia, made by the company THQ, the graphics are very good remembering the game is a couple of years old but i don't find them as detailed or clean and crisp as say Sacred2 fallen angel, it uses the ragdoll physics engine and has full lighting effects, day-night cycles, accurate ancient world mythology and modern 3D graphics.



the story in a nutshell: The Titans have escaped their eternal prison, wreaking havoc and chaos upon earth, the gods seek someone to be there hero and turn the tide in an epic struggle that will determine the fates of both men and god...... YOU...YES YOU...ARE YOU READY TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE? (thats your cue to buy the game )

ok well now that's done now you are ready to become the hero, which of course starts off by having to choose and name and gender....and if you so desire a colour for your tunic, and that's about it for now.



with that sorted out you are placed in a village where you chat with afew NPC and receive quest information to start saving the world and so it begins.

after acouple of levels you start to define your character buy choosing a masterclass which is basically a major skill tree which allows for your special abilities, once again after another 6 or so level you are given the choice to choose a second masterclass but of course you are going to have to be skillful as you are only given a certain amount of skill points to use within your skill tree per gained levelup.



the gameplay was a little sluggish to start of with almost unresponsive, but i soon realized that this is one of the good features of the game, the weapons you use vary in there attack speeds and if you have a weapon that is slow it acts more sluggishly than a faster yielding weapon.

there are a wide array of weapons and loot to be had in the game and they are identified through different colouring.

grey: broken item
white: standard item
yellow: magical item
green: rare item
blue: epic item
purple: legendary item
orange: relic or charm



as well as that there are shops etc which basically are placed to sell your much collected loot, the best items are found from fallen enemies and i to date have only ever brought potions from the stores.



the fighting is typical to a hack n slash action rpg and is fast paced and actually quite a challange, there are a wide array of different enemies and bosses for example centaurs, satyrs, minotaurs, gorgons, and skeletons and i must say when i first came up against a cyclopes i was very impressed.

this game throws hordes at you and if (when) you die you are reborn in a rebirth spring, one feature which i like about this game is when you do die you lose experience and at the place where you died a headstone is erected if you can make it back there and click on the head stone it will reward you with returning some of your lost experience, believe me you will die in this game, the battles are challenging and very satisfying in all regards.



quests are found in the wild and in villages and cities and usually you dont have to make much of a detour to complete any given side quests, i find the game to be a little linear compared to sacred2 which can allow you to travel anywhere and choose quests along the way. this isn't actually a bad thing in my eyes just different, it actually keeps things on track and rather than running around blindly for hours you are gently lead along through the storyline.



the game seems to be quite large and ive been playing for a number of hours and am only starting to open up some of the interesting features of the game. the game is evenly divided into the three realms Greece, Egypt and Asia and im guessing you will spend around the same time in each realm. as well as that the expansion adds a fourth realm that of the underworld which can be unlocked at the completion of the main storyline.

the soundtrack is good if not great but the voice acting wasn't the best in my opinion

this game also offers up multiplayer modes which can be enjoyed from 2-6 players and can be played through internet or lan connection, the manual says you can trade items with other players and store things to swap with other characters you may have created.

all and all this is a fun game that does take alittle while to get into and once you have you will find your self sucked into the battles and loot collecting, i think it is a worthy title to add to your collection if you are into action RPG's but if i had to choose between this and the other recent ARPG sacred2 fallen angel i would choose TitanQuest, really enjoyable fast paced action all the way through.

i give this game a very solid 8/10 and if its a lot like diablo2 that isn't a bad thing in my opinion why fix what isn't broken, the gameplay grows on you and the enemies are interesting and challenging and all and all i think its the next best thing to diablo2.

I'm occasionally playing it too, right now farming Typhon at Epic difficulty. For those who are intrested about the game, you can grab it with ~20$ (Gold Edition) from eBay.

You can grab the gold edition for 20 bucks from STEAM.

 

Either way ebay, or steam $20 is a steal for this game (it can also be had at gameshop for less than $20), for that price those that like arpg's should definately pick it up and those that are not sure about action rpg's have nothing to lose, you will get well over 40 hours gameplay and multiplayer thats good value in anyones book.

 

Loved the game and the expansion! Beat them both with a friend!

 

Well i have to agree the more i play it the more i appreciate it, its actually quite addictive in its simplicity, im starting to remember why i really enjoyed diablo2.

 

Hey mate one question, you said your playing on epic difficulty, which means you have beaten the game, when you start on a different difficulty setting do you start from level one or from where you left off, im wondering about level caps etc as well.
One thing i would like to make clear is this game is far more chellanging than sacred2 fallen angel, the battles can get overwelming very quickly, and now that ive been playing it alittle more i like the way the quests are layed out, it seems to flow more. Im considering revising my score or the game........maybe its worth a 8/10...hmmmm

 

You start from zone 1, from the very beginning but monster levels have rised (quite a bit) and they have new skills. There are even few new mini-bosses.
A very annoying new skill what some monsters have is Reflect - basically all melee players will have big trouble with these guys.

Also, Legendary items do not drop in normal difficulty.

 

Gave it a good two hour run through today, really good fun, enemies are starting to drop some decent gear now, very enjoyable and from what you say may be worth a second run through at some point as well.

Well, I played the demo of Titan Quest and I liked it, similar to D2.

Off-topic: Which game would you recommend as a D2 substitute (if I have only one choice): Titan Quest gold of Sacred 2 Fallen Angel?

Well if you look in my sig i have a review of sacred2 fallen angel as well, but if you wanting something as close to diablo2 as you can get then titan quest is your answer, its surprisingly simular and the more i play it the more i have come to appreciate it.....it really is a great game, sacred2 is more of a sandbox style arpg and its also very comical in its presentation, i like it but the side quests get alittle annoying...anyway read the review but id lean towards titanquest if you are after a D2 clone.

 

Just finished the game and i it was an exceptional game, challanging throughout and extremely addictive in its gameplay, the main story took about 35hrs to complete doing around 90% of the sidequests, i didnt spend much time ginding and found the time felt right for me, as i brought the gold edition i have the expansion which adds one more realm adding alittle over 10hrs to the gameplay taking the total to closer to 50hrs which is fantastic considering how cheap the game is to buy. If you are looking for a really good arpg to fill in the long wait for diablo3 look no further.

I'm sure your review was great, I'm just saying I personally prefer a review of such detail to have a little respect for the English language. But, I am a crabby stickler, so who cares anyway?!

i dunno mtness, gamezone (i think) gave titan quest and sacred 2 seven or six /10. i played titan quest and sacred 2 and i think you're being a bit too generous with your ratings but nice review anyways

 

Its possible mate, but simply remember that reviews are exactly that, they are based on an individuals perspective of the given game, i like the genre and once i got into titan quest played it straight through, thats the first game in eight years that i have done that with, i gave sacred2 7.5/10 for joe average and titan quest was better than that, i enjoyed it more than diablo2 which got a 9+/10 from most reviewers, so i guess in my view i didnt over score it...of course its a review so it is based on my experience with the game....at the end of the day reviews are there to give a potential buyer an idea of the game, but many factors need to be taken into account ie does the reviewer like the genre?, so reviews need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Being playing online ofver the last few days and find it very enjoyable, great fun swapping items with others and working through the game on higher levels with others, the game increases the difficulty depending on the level and amount of players online, there is a very active community online at all times with plenty of games to be had, there are cheat/hackers that play ut you can view your team mates checking out equipment, and can simply boot/ban a player that is hacked items..there are plenty of games around for cheats so everyone wins i guess.
One thing which i dont like particulary is when loot is dropped its first in first serve, sacred2 has solved this by dividing loot up so that certain pieces can only be picked up by certain players, of course after that you are free to trade, but it definatly makes ot more fair in the long run.
Online is a fun adition to titanquest and definatly adds to the replay value of the game.
