It would seem that my laptop runs games slower and I have to lower graphical details in the options menu for steady framerates.

I've tried closing pretty much all background processes so that only 180mb is being used.

    Any suggestions?

ok im gonna try overclocking it.

How much should I overclock it? Will this void my warranty? Are there any side-effects?

hold on, your gpu isn't performing too well compared to what? a x700 256 should hold you up well in anything with decent settings

my x700 appears to have slowed down. I haven't changed drivers or anything. So now i just download omega drivers and I want to overclock to get it faster.

Will it be safe to increase the core clock up 100mhz or 200 mhz?

    If the gpu is overheating,
it will automatically slow itself down and generate less heat so it isn't damaged.
If it still overheats, then Windows will shut down.

Do you think its an overheating problem?

my temperatures have been the same since the day i recieved the laptop.

So will i be ok increasing my core clock up to 560mhz? (360mhz original)

also for my memory speed shall i increase it by 200mhz as well and have no worries?

We need more information than what you are providing.

    What game, what settings, etc.

Check out the thread called "ATI Overclocking" if you want to know how to overclock.

    Yes Darbyjack, slow down,

What 3dmarks are you getting? It should be around 2500-2800 3dmark05. And that is fast. If you still think it is the overheating or some kind of underclocking, you can easily check with Ati tray tools. There you can enable On screen display of clock/mem speeds and check if everything is ok while gaming. Maybe your system has some other reason to perform poorly? Don't rush into overclocking except you know exactly what are you doing.

    Cheers,

    yeh i got 2570 in 3dmark05.

Meh.... Maybe my gpu is fine

I overclocked it and there was barely any difference. When I overclocked it too high, there were weird dots and lines (artifacts i think they're called)

OC can do a lot. My x700 128 MB DDR goes over 3000 easily, and the default is 2270! So If you are patient and read the things from our posts you can achieve that too. Chaz did it with his Axiom x700 256MB! Please take into consideration that maybe you don't want to do all that afterall. Heat, instability and warranty are things you have to think of too.
If you are still detrmined to overclock your (fast) gpu/mem, I'll be glad to help you. :)

    Cheers,

Yes, be very careful with overclocking. Do it at your own risk, and only when you feel you need the extra performance. I find that I rarely have to overclock to get good performance.

I crashed my pc when I suddenly increased an extra 100mhz for my core clock

How will overclocking affect my warranty? I didn't see anything about overclocking in the agreement

They don't need to mention every possibility for what voids your warranty. Overclocking a part is using it outside of it's "intended" use...so they don't cover that.

Certainly a 100mhz increase is crazy. If it starts at 360mhz you want to give it a 25% or more increase in speed off the bat? Start much lower than that.

Feel free to overclock...but just realize the risk you're taking. You can fry your components by doing it and the manufacturer might choose not to cover it, if they suspect overclocking is what caused it.

Darby, no offense, but you have no idea what you're doing, and I recommend you do not overclock - you are going to ruin your card. The ATI Overclocking thread has a lot of good information in it.

I have read endless pages on overclocking but still fry every card I try to overclock. The only thing I really know how to do is change the numbers and unlock pieplines although Ive never unlocked any or tried. I have always started carefully and never gone above 30 or so extra mhz. But it seems every time I do it no matter how small the overclock I still start getting lines and little box shaped things on my screen 2d and 3d. This has proven irreversable even aftre cleaning out rivetuner completey from my system. Lucky the 2 first cards I fried were still within 14 days from bestbuy. I bought my first 5900 non ultra and oc it about 20 mhz on both mem and gpu and it happened then I returned it and got another one overclocked it, same thing happened, returned it and got a 6800 gt, didnt overclock it and everythings been fine until yesterday. I bought me a loaded laptop from dell e1705 and have been reading these forums about oc so I decided aftre 2 yaers to try to oc my 6800 gt. I oc it to 400/1100 yesterday for 1 3dmark run then uninstalled rivetuner. Sure enough today I was playing wow and I started getting al the trinagles and things in my screen. So there is no way in hell im even gonna touch my e1705 nowwhen it gets here tues. IS this bad luck? maybe. Am i doing something wrong? Probaly. Do i suggest it? Hell no! not unless u have better luck then me anyways :p I do want to learn tho and have good success like other people so if any of u have any tips its appreciated.

that makes me feel lucky since when I overclocked 100mhz, the side effects were not permanent :\

    Hi viperx,

I feel sorry for you man :( . It shouldn't be so bad scenario. Maybe you are jinxed or something  Not trying to minimize your bad experience, I can say that I have been overclocking my GPUs and CPUs for ten years now, since my first computer and Riva TNT 16MB I still remember latencies and 3dmark01 and my attempts to get better results (and it was faster than my latter TNT2!). I have overclocked my notebook x700 that used to have an airpocket in the heatsink thermal patch and was running at 110 degrees celsius! I also managed to get high overclocking speeds that gave me over 3100 3dmark05 (from 2270 on default). I have never, ever lost any card or CPU. It is dangerous. But the reward is also good. For me at least.

I really don't encourage you Darbyjack! You did a foolish thing, and there was a thread where a guy did it by accident - we all were helping him for a week to get things back like they were. And it was the happyend. Please check my signatures and Ati x700 overclock thread. Otherwise just leave it. A friendly advice. :)

    Cheers,

Viperx, is there a possibility that the clock speeds you tested somehow were saved so that the card is using those speeds all the time now? If you overclock too high, it's better to use the program to reset to the defaults than directly uninstalling it.

You know I thought about that but shouldnt it always revert back to normal when you do a clean uninstall of rivetuner? Also, I traded out my 5700 ultra for My 6800 gt to see if it was the card. Then, when I put my 6800 back in it fixed the problem for now. Maybe unseating the card is the only way to get it to set back?

I don't know as I never have used Rivatuner, but I would still recommend checking that the clock speeds are back to default before uninstalling. As the swapping seemed to help, I'm guessing that the Rivatuner DID save those settings somewhere so that the card was running with those clocks all the time.

The only place must be the graphic card BIOS, but then swapping wouldn't work. I'm glad that the card wasn't burnt in the end.

    Cheers,
