Does the gamepad show up in Your Devices (I presume you are running Windows) Also you might want to make sure the drivers are installed at all or correctly. You might want to google if the device requires a driver in the first place.

Can you go in Devices to your gamepad, right click and go to properties and try to reconfigure the settings. You should be able to get to see the inputs sent to the computer. But still this sounds like a third party driver is missing. Did you google it?

So is there zero input from the gamepad, or does some of the input work and some not? If it's the latter, that only some of the buttons register, I would guess it's either a broken gamepad, a corrupt driver, or an issue with game settings (maybe you somehow reassigned some of the inputs).

What OS and version are you using?

Official Xbox 360 controller driver for Windows is needed for it to work:
Software Downloads: Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

If already installed, uninstall and reinstall the driver.

These steps will help narrow down the problem:
Try the controller with another machine or Xbox and see if it's the controller itself going bad.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Was there something you did or the system did that caused the controller to malfunction? If so, system restore.
Worst it can happen - reinstall Windows.

    Just go to Device Manager.
    - Right click on the device
    - Update Drivers
    - Choose from list of devices, NOT have disk.
    - Scroll to the bottom, you'll see Xbox 360 Peripherals
    - Install the Xbox 360 controller

No download needed, Windows 8 is 360 controller ready out of the box.

    Should look like this:
