Rivatuner, without a doubt. nTune is virtually useless with most desktop motherboards (not sure about notebooks though, but I'll assume it's no different)

I think Powerstrip is the best overclocking software there is. It is so much easier than RivaTuner or nTune.

ah, thank you.. got confused with all that fan stuff ;p

im running an 8700m gt at 4880 3dmark score, my temp on this computer never goes above 60 C so i think this OCing might work somewhat?

I like nTune more than rivatuner cause rivatuner has an issue with ocing on startup for vista

Well, technically , laptop OCing is not safe. But at your temps, I guess you could push it a bit.
Riva Tuner seems easy enough, with those sliding bars. I used to OC the crap out of my old FX5200 and rivatnt2...but so far I`ve never OCed a laptop GPU,even though the max temp I saw was 59( after 4 h of crysis)

what kind of 3dmark score do u have? im hesitating now on doing this OC'ing ;\ people are scaring me out of it lol

couple mroe questions - prolly really stupid ones too

    1. should i not have BOTH nTune and Rivatuner installed on my laptop at once?

    2. i know this is a stupid question but, there IS a way to go back to default settings correct and eliminate the OC settings? and how would this be accomplished in something like rivatuner

Me ? I have 5389 , but Crysis is getting on my nervs. I guess 5 more fps would be worth an OC...but then again, I`d like to play it safe for now...
    1) I don`t think nTune will work, isn`t it only for nvidia based mobos?. Then the choice is easy, Riva Tuner!
    2) uhm , yes, there is a default setting button there. Or better yet, just write down your initial values and double check that way.
All this talk about OCing is starting to make me all giggy, I think I`m gonna do it myself... :D

    hmmm..

im not seeing the default thing to go back to normal settings on rivatuner - do i just 'uncheck' the enable driver-level overclocking and it'll automatically go back to stock?

also -- anyone recommend uninstalling ntune? i like it that it has the monitor to look at the memory/disk being used but i guess i can achieve that with task manager?

If you're talking about ease of use, nTune is far easier... There's only 2 sliders you'll ever need to modify (and the only two sliders it will let you modify :p): The memory clock speed and the core clock speed.

There's also a simple radio button that allows you to restore factory default clock speeds with 2 clicks.

Rivaturner is far more powerful and feature-filled (On top of memory and core clock speeds, you can modify shader clock independently). However, it can't always OC with the newest drivers (So you might have to wait for an update for the program itself), whereas nTune will work with all the new drivers without a hitch.

Powerstrip, just click an icon in your tray and you can go to default settings or any oc profile you saved you don't even have to open the program, and its compatible with just about anything. Try it you'll love it. Also you shouldn't have Rivatuner and Ntune installed will cause problems!

    Why?

There's no reason they would conflict. Neither of them are dynamic background applications (well, RivaTuner can be made to run in the background) that interact with each other, so I don't think that's true.

well, i guess im gonna uninstall nTune and keep rivatuner because it lacks the shader feature and i dont want it to interfere with anything. is this wise?

anyone know how to go back to default settings with rivatuner?

Since RivaTuner requires elevated privaleges it won't startup with vista unless you turn off OC. Instead it vista will say "so and so tried to startup" and you have to click an "allow" box for it to work. This is only applies of course if you want to have the oc on startup.

Recent versions of Systool don't seem to run correctly on my notebook at all. nTune didn't seem to give me all the options normally given to users of Nvidia cards for some reason, plus it had limiters (which Systool does not). Now I use Rivatuner (Rivatuner was the first OC program I used anyways). Rivatuner lets me tune high enough for the GPU core, though for the VRAM it doesn't let me OC as high as I want, since I know my VRAM can handle 900 MHz effective, however it's set at 850 currently.
