Have you noticed in Program Data\Nvidia\DisplayContainer RAS nvidia installs NvTelemetry and adds optimus metadata.json file if you allow access to internet when running Nvidia setup even with NvCleanInstall or other tools. NvTelemetry and NVcontainer cause performance dips sometimes.

Only real issue I have is that Nvidia Control panel won't open; icon shows up in icon tray, but double clicking does nothing.

I have only encountered that when using the crappy DCH version of drivers when the UWP app filth is not installed. Did you install a DCH driver? If so, the app is probably goofed up.

I downloaded the game ready driver for the RTX 2070 Super. I extracted the downloaded zip to the same folder. I turned off WiFi (Windows Updates for some reason seems to beat me in the reinstallation phase). I rebooted into safe mode and used DDU to remove the old installation. I rebooted back to the normal desktop. I run the setup.exe file in the extracted folder, perform a clean install and let it rip.

I close the installer and get a pop-up that the Nvidia controller has not been installed (though the icon shows up in the bottom right of my window. When I click on the pop up, I get hijacked to the Windows App store to install as a UWA. Wrong answer. I close that offer. I see the Nvidia icon is still in my icon tray. All i can do though is right click to exit. If I go to the start menu, or even the search bar next to the Start button, it can't be located on the computer.

I have W10 Pro 2004 build 19041.63 Under Windows Update there is a feature update 20H2 that at least for now is still be offered as an optional update. No thanks.

I played Star Wars Squadrons for about an hour without any issue. Here's a screenshot with the default fan curve (quiet for gaming). Fan curve shown below is what I used in benchmarking such that temps don't get above 60 degrees C. Looks like the driver update took despite the foolery between MS and Nvidia and not having the controller installed.

You probably downloaded the DCH version instead of the standard one.

Now that is indeed interesting. I've always gone here to get my downloads. Nothing here other than Game Ready or Studio Driver

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

There is no option for standard or DCH here. But, if I go further down the page, under Beta and Older Drivers:

There is the option here to download the standard or DCH versions. Just a quick inspection of the standard version shows it has a 30 MB smaller download size than the DCH. Really disappointing that Nvidia has to be misleading with their website. I usually only go to the second method of downloading when looking for an older driver to replace the buggy newer one. I've used the "implied" method without fail in the past.

I found this in the FAQ section:

Bottom Line - Nvidia's default download is DCH.

Either use NVCleanstall, download standard drivers from Techpowerup/guru3d/ NBR or remove the DCH text in the link from Nvidia.

What irritates me is that I should be able to get my driver directly from Nvidia's site by following:

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Which brings up this set of drop downs:

Nowhere on this drop-down are standard drivers found. In fact, the driver I get when following this process is the DCH driver.

Being the savvy 52 year old nuclear engineer (actually I am) i see the following list is also provided on the same page as the above drop downs:

If I then click on Beta and Older Drivers, I get something useful:

Because I have Standard selected above, clicking on the driver gets me the correct driver since the file size is about 30 MB smaller.

You guys know I'm already willing to go out of the way to install my drivers IAW

http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...perly update your nVIDIA graphics card driver.

There is nothing intuitively obvious about having to now dive into the beta driver downloads link to get the standard driver I've always been able to obtain. I can do that. I have done that in the past. But, I shouldn't have to. This is a dodgy business practice that results in less savvy but just as honorable end users being forced to accept products they did not seek.

Yes if you have nuked your OS from UWP appx, nvidia control panel will not install.
@Papusan I have installed it and it seems to downloaded nvidia optimus, telemetry packages since I blocked incorrect path. I think I might revert to older 431 just to get rid off telemetry and Nvcontainer.

Which is why I wait for them to get posted here or on Guru3D so I don't need to go through any of that nonsense on NVIDIA's own website.

Can you use desktop DCH/Standard on laptop GPU? I couldn't get Optimus to work correctly with Desktop exe files.

It's good to know those alternatives exist. Just very frustrating having to rely on others to provide a service that I should be able to perform on my own:

    • Go to device manufacturer's website
    • Search for drivers
    • Download applicable driver
    • Install
I've seen the wizard behind the curtain. I now know what to look for and where to find it. I just hope that others can learn from this how easy it is to be duped by something as benign as getting a driver for hardware I purchased.

NVIDIA provides separate desktop and laptop packages for all their mainline driver versions, so I'm not sure why you'd ask about using the former on the latter. The only exception is when they put out a hotfix, which combines all desktop and mobile parts into a single download.

I had this problem before with older drivers. I think it was 452.06.

Ever since i installed newer drivers i never had this problem again. I guess it installed the windows store version of Nvidia's control panel and it works the same. Unfortunately it wont allow me to install the standard version as it keep saying that my version of Windows isnt supported

Uninstalled DCH drivers for standard drivers and blocked Nvcontainer from accessing internet to prevent NvTelemetry/NvProfile being downloaded.

I downloaded the correct standard driver and had no problems installing. Nvidia control panel installed with no problems. Quoting The Who, "I won't get fooled again."
