Installing this one. This seems like a significant release:
- RTX ray tracing technology for DX12 (Volta GPUs for now)
- Vulkan 1.1 API (first major Vulkan update, supports multi-GPU and better DX12 compatibility)
- New sample rates in HDMI audio driver
- Discontinue support for 32-bit OSes and Fermi GPUs

What's the difference between the "Desktop" and "Notebook" versions?
I'm downloading the desktop version right now because I don't think the notebook version will like a 210W TDP GTX 1070
or am I wrong?
If the magic smoke comes out however.........I'm serious. (I just ran Heaven for 1 hour at 210W TDP with no boom. Voltage only dropped once or twice per loop momentarily due to exceeding 210W briefly. -

NVIDIA GeForce 397.31 WHQL Drivers Put GTX 1060-Powered Systems Into Endless Restart Loop
by Chino Thursday, April 26th 2018 18:02 Discuss (15 Comments)
NVIDIA released their latest GeForce 397.31 WHQL drivers yesterday. The new 397.31 drivers came game-ready for recently released titles BattleTech and Frostpunk while also provided support for features like NVIDIA RTX and Vulkan 1.1. However, numerous GTX 1060 owners have reported on the official NVIDIA forums that they were unable to complete the installation of the 397.31 drivers. Users were prompted to restart their systems to complete the installation process, but once they have done so, they were presented with the exact screen over and over again putting their systems into an endless restart loop. While NVIDIA is investigating the bug, GTX 1060 owners are encouraged to roll back to a previous version of the drivers as a stop-gap solution. The workaround consists of rebooting the affected system in safe mode and running Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove the 397.31 drivers. Users can then proceed to install the previous 391.35 drivers normally.Vasudev likes this. -

Unfortunately I had to uninstall these drivers.
With 391.35 I was able to stream on twitch and play games 3 hours straight no problem.
With 397.31 I was able to play for an hour then it crashed while streaming, hard restart/gpu crash. Started up the same game without streaming and it crashed again.
Testing out a different set and so far it works better.
This is full uninstall/DDU/Gsync disabled/Battery Boost disabled etc.. -

I'm using 397.40 vulkan right now which uses a 396 branch (older) as opposed to 397 but they're a separate set.

I help a lot of people on twitch with settings so I usually test new updates/drivers all the time so I can rollback or troubleshoot better -
4K gaming holds 1,860 Mhz steady with +0 offset lol. Before hand, I could add +120 and it still would bounce from 1720-1847. -

Not sure if it matters which. Check Papusan's posts.

Also, could you achieve better memory overclocks with higher TDP? -
Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
Beats me. I'm stable at 650-700 offset. 700 sometimes gets whacky if temps get high.

Yes, you had to run a lower core offset because you were just TDP Throttling when you tried to reach the higher offset before and then being throttled back, and afterwards, you're reaching a higher core clock speed with the same voltage as before, which happens to wind up being insufficient voltage for that speed, and since it didn't throttle back because of TDP, it tried to run at that speed and crashed.
For example, I can do +250 mhz (maybe slightly more) offset with 115W (stock) TDP. At 150W TDP I can do +225 mhz. But at 200W TDP I can only do +155. Because the clocks it boosts to and doesn't throttle at, with +225, don't have enough voltage. 1.062v can't be maintained because of Pascal cancer Temp throttling even if you lock it. And the CFG edit to unlock adjustable voltage unlocks the slider, but the vbios ignores it.
So yeah -
This driver is a bust because it prevents rainbow six siege from starting, something to do with my gpu not supporting dx11.
EDIT: GPU-Z marks the driver signature for 397.31 as "BETA" and all of the checkboxes below the SLI field are unchecked.
NVIDIA royally screwed the pooch on this!

Maybe its just a placebo effect, but playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on highest possible settings (except texture quality which I left on High because Very high needs more than 6 Gb VRAM) with custom refresh rate 100 Hz G-Sync seems to be slightly smoother at lower framerates than with the previous driver.
Windows animations on Windows desktop seems to be slightly smoother too.
OS is the latest Windows 10 1803 with fresh install from USB (not updated from WIndows Update). -
I feel like I must be the only person that extremely rarely has any issues with nvidia drivers. I just do the express install all the time. Games seem to keep chugging along as usual. Sometimes bugs are fixed. Sometimes perf is better in some games. Every once in a while some bug makes it through but unless I'm playing that game I probably don't know. Things are never perfect, but they seem to do a good job given a monumentally difficult software and hardware engineering task.

. Other than the occasional bug here and there, I never had a problem with either AMD or Nvidia drivers in the past 15 years. But that doesn't mean bugs don't exist, it is just that our usage scenarios may be a little bit limited.

hmmm...i see that the previous version of 397.31 was only 2mb smaller than the current version of 397.31....WTF????

apparently wolfenstein 2 crashes with this driver.

OK, so after extended use the drivers cause Rainbow Six: Siege to not load at all.
EDIT: I wonder if it is because I did not reinstall the drivers after updating Windows 10 to 1803?Last edited: May 2, 2018 -
