I am considering buying a laptop that has the nVIDIA Geforce GO 8600GT 512MB EXTREME PCI-X GPU. I have heard that there have been major problems with the nVIDIA cards. Does anyone have this specific card and are you having major problems with it?

dear Xxsprint, there isnt any MAJOR issues with that card. many people already got that card, and its really great midrange to tell you the truth, so it would be safe to get it :D

What machine are you looking at? And btw, the correct name of the 8600 is the 8600M GT. The fact that they call it the Go means they haven't updated thier site in a long time, and the rest of it is just rediculous marketing hype. THe 8600M is not an extreme (though it is more than decent) card. And all dedicated GPUs are PCI-X these days. But yeah, it would help a lot more to know which machine you were looking at.

I forget which ODM model the Impulse is, but the 8600M GT is a fine card.

You should probably know that Intel chipsets do not support DDR2 800 SODIMMs so they are just going to run at DDR2 667 mode.

In any case, I don't believe nVidia has confirmed specifically which GPUs are affected and it'll probably be limited to certain batches rather than an entire GPU line. The problem appears to have to do with the GPU packaging, like the PCB and the connections between the GPU die and the PCB rather than the GPU die itself. And I believe a lot of the talk appears to be related to the 8400M GS. It's hard to confirm anything right now, but I would think that problem doesn't affect current production GPUs since I don't see nVidia continue to ship defect GPUs.

Great machine you planning to build! :)

Just to let you know, I've owned three different laptops with 8600M GT and I've had no issues with any of them. Its a solid mid-range card in terms of performance. :)

Does no one else agree that $2,000 is pretty high for that system?

I use that card in my Macbook Pro for gaming. Been running fine for a year now! I don't know who was having all of the issues that were detailed in the various news articles flooding the net recently, but it didn't seem to be coming from users on NBR. I haven't see anyone mention a flat-out bricked Nvidia GPU.

I wonder what systems were actually experiencing the issues?

That'll be the blu-ray and the 4 Gb of DDR2 800 ram (which will only run at 667 anyway) plus fitting all that in a 14"

It's still a very powerful 14". i might have recommended the f8sn for a lot cheaper but similar specs (but w/o blu-ray)

You should be aware that this notebook is the same notebook as the Zepto 6324W/6224W. They are made by Inventec. It is the Inventec W14.

    Pretty cool.
