With the 6700K being a bit of a disappointment, I'm thinking of keeping my Alienware for a bit longer... The 970M is very capable and the 990M looks like a long way out... Well too bad...
-
A lot of reviews say the 6700k is expensive, and provided negligible gains over the 4790k. It is disappointing.
If there is a 990M, I think it'll just be a waste of money with Pascal on the horizon.Last edited: Aug 6, 2015 -

Regarding the 990m* speculation.. 2 x 980m power on a single mobility PCB.. not a Maxwell's chance in hell -
If that's the case then AMD processors would be king for gaming

I'm not holding my breath for DX12. The first DX12 games -- Delaware: Doctor (DE: MD) and Ashes of the Singularity won't be out until 2016, with DE: MD aiming for an "early" 2016 release, and Ashes of the Singularity still unknown. Mainstream adoption will likely still take another year or two. I'll believe DX12's hype when I see it.

Is this site for real? http://www.ceg-hardcorecustom.com/product/ceg_nvidia_gtx_990m
Anyone have an extra 1700 Euros lying around to pre-order one of these and see what happens? -
They have it for close to a month now, no one knows if real. Even if someone has the money to shell, it's still a pre-order and you don't actually know what you'll get. It might be a bit overclocked 980m. There are no promises what-so-ever. As for the new model, whatever it is called, not able to be MXM, I'll say it would be odd. MXM has everything needed right there, the extra thing this new GPU would need is cooling, and would be the same size be it soldered, or MXM. You don't magically need smaller fan and radiator once going soldered, although seeing how most thin and lights are made it seems that ODMs/OEMs think so. Shaking my head.

These guys were way off. How embarrassing is that. I never understood why journalists would mention a date when speculating about products. They could just have easily said, " 980Ti delayed due to production issues."
Anyway, point being, you guys can't take this 990M stuff seriously - especially this performance rumor - until there are new rumors regarding a GTX 990. NVIDIA has always launched desktop before mobile. The GTX 980 came out in September 2014 and the GTX 980M came out in October 2014.

The only way to get 2500 cores and 16GB of VRAM is a GM200 with the memory bus disabled from 384bit to 256bit
Should be some decent clocks on the VRAM to have enough bandwidth I think. 1500MHz perhaps? -
Im a bit new to this but if they are doing 16gb for a single gpu would that mean hbm or some variant of? last i recal someone was telling me that 12gb was the hard limit on gddr5 based cards.
speaking of hbm is there any news on pascal? what we are getting when we are getting it ect. -
NVIDIA could fit 16GB if they stacked HBM and launch some sort of hybrid between Maxwell and Pascal, sort of like an experimental card. -
-
16GB is perfectly possible with these

yea, i have seen other people referr to him for the final word on things during my perusing of the forums.
and i think i have seen that article or references to it somewhere. i guess it didnt stick.
though if the 990m was paired with the hbm memory it would most certainly be interesting. that being said reading through the forum for pascal that J.dre linked i might just sit on my cash a bit longer. lol -
So I`ve researched a bit and found out that:
1. SK-Hynix does not have 8Gb (8Gigabit = 1GB) GDDR5 ready. They are ready for customers in Q1 2016.
2. Samsung have 8Gb/1GB GDDR5 ready for sure. They are specifically made for notebooks. Link 3 posts above
3. Micron/Elpida also have 8Gb/1GB GDDR5 ready. They have already shipped it to undisclosed customers
For those that don`t know:
GTX 980M and all MXM cards have a limit of 16 GDDR5 chips since there is no more room for more. There is 8 chips above near the GPU die and 8 underneath. Previously we had a 8GB limit due to GDDR5 was only 512MB. Now they are 1024MB.
Thats why 990M can now be 16GB. What the hell one would do with all that VRAM, thats a different questionKommando, Mr Najsman and MichaelKnight4Christ like this. -
The excessive vram isn't there for the benefit of consumers.
Regardless of my nitpicking, I'm still firmly in the "I'll only believe it when I see it camp". So we shall see.Last edited: Aug 8, 2015 -
as crazy and unlikely and just....wrong as it all sounds concerning this mythical 990M: even though cloudfire can be quite annoying sometimes, hes also spot on like....every single time ive seen these speculation threads blow up
so yeah, ill try and stay openminded, add to that a ton of curiosity as to whats gonna be awaiting us in week 40, 2015
in any case, thx for the ongoing information flow @Cloudfire, keeps things interesting, to say the least

I don't understand a mobile gaming GPU with 16GB's of VRAM. Next year the card will be obsolete, so why even invest so heavily into it in the first place? For gaming desktops or workstations, I understand how 16GB's may come in handy eventually. 4k Eyefinity / Surround used nearly all of the Titan X's 12GB's. That's 3 or more 4k monitors. You can't even do that with a laptop, yet. Seems like a road leading to a dead end, IMO.
That's why it's hard for me to believe. NVIDIA must know this. It's also why I think the 990M will be a wild card (if it's real).Last edited: Aug 8, 2015 -
As I said, the 16GB vram (if true) is there for the sole purpose of being able to charge exorbitant amounts for it. Consumers like seeing big numbers, and being able to advertise you have MOAR RAMZ means people would be more willing to pay a premium for a feature, even if it's absolutely useless on laptops as you pointed out.

I still think calling it the 990m is not a good idea since there is no 990 desktop but whatever this thing will be I hope it replaces the 980m and not be added as a more luxurious option. I don't think its a smart idea raising the price of the premium and offering a third more expensive option, not a good idea. Based on the name alone I'm starting to doubt a refresh will even happen this year. The 980m is still considered really powerful and there is no competition matching its performance. When Nvidia dropped the 980ti they were making a clear statement that the "980" is their top of the line number for gtx cards so nt see why they would name the mobile one a 990m, It would have to be a different name.
