If I were to get a Thinkpad T61P vs the Asus G1s-A1, would the thinkpad's card preform better for gaming (if all other specs are the same, and the same resolution).

Also, which is better for photoshop?

Technically, it's pretty much the same card, though the 8600m GT should be better for gaming.

Photoshop doesn't rely on the GPU.

    The 14" T61p is a nerfed version of 570m, which equates to roughly a Vostro 1500's 8600GT GDDR2

The 15" T61p is the normal 570m, which is equal to the G1s-A1's 8600GT GDDR3 if both are using same drivers

    Oh, so the Vostro's 8600 isn't DDR3.

Is there a list of what laptops have what videocards (with details such as ddr2/3 and actual memory [virtual memory my ass])

    Sorry :)
There are so many threads that ask about links it is hard sometimes to find the real thing (and I guess I am not helping).

Also, does anyone know what the weight difference is between the 14.1 and 15.4 inch Thinkpad T61p's is:
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=1F106632CBC24D2CBD23DF19644D3694

Because of the nerfed 570M on the 14.1" thinkpad, would it have better battery life (while playing games or just idle).

Probably would have the same battery life or maybe even worse depending on clocks, GDDR3 is more power efficient/runs at lower voltage.

Ok, so in practical terms is there a significant difference in performance between the 8600GT GDDR2 and 8600GT GDDR3?

I just ordered a T61p 14" not knowing the difference between the cards, and am curious about its future gaming potential.

8600m GT DDR2 will score around 3000 in 3DMark06, GDDR3 will score around 3700. Search the forums, we've been over this a dozen times.

theres not much difference. The 8600gt is just made for multimedia stuff versus the quadro which is a workstation card for 3 modelling and stuff. Reguardless, they both are dedicated cards and will play new games at nice settings.

    8600GT GDDR3 is a lot better than 8600GT GDDR2

However, if you're looking for 14" laptops, T61p is the one with the best graphics card right now.

I think that the best 14" with 8600GT's have the 128MB, so in that case the 128 570M is better than the 128 8600GT?

    Okay, what about DDR3 8600GS (128MB) vs DDR2 8600GT (256MB)?

I know that DDR3 has a good performance boost, but what about the differences in memory and clock speed?

And VRAM means Video Ram, it can be dedicated, shared, or the sum of the two (total VRAM).

    wow
    I hate marketing.

"This has 128MB ram, but if we take it from the measly 1GB of RAM in the PC, we can say it has 512MB of ram, rending the PC unable to run vista with 640MB ram"

That is basically what it means if you see somewhere an 8600GS with 256MB ram, correct? (even if I have the numbers wrong)

Turbocache will not take the full amount of system RAM unless you have more than 2GB of total system RAM, so if you only had 1GB of system RAM, it would turbocache a lesser amount,

The T61p 14.1" with a Quadro 570M (8600M GT) 128MB is awfully tempting, although it runs about $1600 with 2GB RAM, 1GB Turbo, DVDRW and Bluetooth. Not sure how much the difference between 128MB and 256MB vram would matter. I've been looking for something as small as possible that could still run newer games at at least medium settings. Are there any other 14" laptops out there with an 8600M or equivalent? I see the HP 2500 in the other thread but it's north of $1900. I also did a forum search and google search for "14.1 and 8600M", but it came up with a lot of results that weren't what I was looking for.

Edit: I was able to find a 20% off code for the 14.1" w/ 570M that brought the price down. Code = USPTRSERIES case sensitive -

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)[1]
    Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium[12]
    14.1 SXGA+ TFT
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (128MB)
    2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)[8]
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    80GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm[4]
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim[5]
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG[10]
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery[60]
    8891: Express - 1 Yr Depot Warranty

$1275 subtotal without shipping or tax (not sure if either of those apply)

Now I just need to find out what kind of 3DMark06 scores that 128MB 570/8600 would get.

The 570m in the T61p is a cut down version with half the memory bus width, which makes it perform similarly to the budget 8600M-GT's found in notebooks like the Dell Inspirons and the Compal IFL90. However, the Thinkpad currently has the most powerful GPU of any 14" notebook in the U.S. The only comparable notebooks are the Zepto 6224w and the BenQ 14", neither of which are available in North America.

Well, the F8Sv is pretty much confirmed to have the 8600M-GT in North America, but we don't know about clock speeds, bus width, or memory type yet.

And the only direct comparison between the two T61p's was done in 3dmark05 (since 06 is heavily biased against 128mb cards), where the 14" scored 5700 and the 15.4" scored 7500.

    For in game performance
(say, CS:S fps, Quake 3 FPS, or Far Cry FPS)
    is there a comparison?

Or, about how much will I lose with the 128MB card (and is the 128MB DDR2?)

No, there's no real gaming comparisons yet. The 128mb is GDDR3, but it has a smaller bus width so it performs very similarly to DDR2. You can expect the card to perform like the 256mb DDR2 at lower resolutions (1280x960 and below I'd expect), and at higher resolutions it will perform about 20% slower than the 256mb DDR2. That's at stock settings of course, with the GDDR3 mem it will overclock nicely.

So which is the better card for Crysis? I am deciding between the 8600m GT on the Asus V1S-B1 and the Quadro FX 570m on the Lenovo 15.4" T61p. I would assume the 8600m GT. But I think the overall build quality on the T61p is better. I assume most people will say neither are good enough for Crysis but regardless I am not waiting for an 8800m if that ever comes out and I am also not buying a Toshiba Satellite just for the 8700m GT.

I think what people have been saying is with the Nvidia (8600M GT) drivers, the 570M is equivalent to the 8600M GT.

Also, the V1S's GT has DDR2, while the T61p has DDR3 (like the Asus G1S-A1)

Don't rely on 3D mark as a substitution for real life gaming.

My gddr2 512mb 8600mGT runs every game I throw at it superbly, and I even play all of the games at native resolution of 1680x1050.

What you need to decide is, what's more important to you, a couple hundred dollars, or a extra few FPS.

I got my laptop configuration or around 1700$.

Where the macbook pro will run you 2500$ with the closest set-up, and the g1s will drive a few hundred more than the IFL90.

More then likely the most powerful 15.4" Laptop right now is arguably the 256mb Macbook Pro.

Just depends on hhow much of an enthusiast you are.

The 15.4" T61p is undoubtedly the better gaming machine.

Yes, the MBP along with the Asus G1s, the HP 8510p/w, and the Thinkpad T61p are the most powerful 15.4" laptops right now.

Yeah both V1S's have the 512 MB version. My friend got a V1S-A1 but I feel the build quality to be cheap. It looks flashy but nothing too special. The touch pad is practically unusable at first. I think the Lenovo's touch pad and track point work incredibly well. While the best design for keyboard and touch pad is clearly the Mac Book Pro, I don't have the extra cash for it. I am trying to max at $2,000 and the T61p has me over by like $100 or so using an Education discount.
