So I'm having an enormous amount of trouble with my new laptop of two weeks. It's an Acer TimelineX 5830TG with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics and a GT 540m. I remember at one point I was able to access the nVidia control panel and I remember some sort of taskbar icon indicating Optimus's existence. I think, later, I decided to download the newest Intel HD and nVidia drivers. I'm assuming I thought all was well because I'm been messing with in the past day or two and I can't get anything to work at all. Under the device manager, a problem is indicated for the 540m and the error is Code 43. Sometimes, with certain drivers, there is an nVidia icon in the taskbar. If I try going into the Control panel, however, I get a message saying "Nvidia Display Settings are not Available. You are not currently using a display attached to an nVidia GPU." I can also tell that the GT 540m is NOT being used in games as the performance is the same even if I disable switchable graphics in the bios. Note that my only two options regarding GPUs are "Integrated" and "Switchable".

I've tried just about everything, with every combination of drivers. I've tried downloading the latest drivers from the Acer website, I've tried updating the bios to v1.07 (including the vbois from factory 2111.0 to 2119.0), and reverting back to v1.05. In the meantime I've downloaded the latest nVidia/Intel HD drivers and older nVidia drivers. I restored the laptop to factory conditions, with still the same problems. I then reverted back to the 1.05 bios version, restored to factory, and I still have the same problems. This is where I'm at not. I have no clue and I'm pretty frustrated.

Also potentially interesting: if I uninstall both video drivers (the 540m and Intel HD) and then install nVidia drivers first, there is no problem indicated in the device manager. It's not until I install the Intel drivers that a problem occurs.

Has ANYONE had these problems? Can anyone offer any help? Thanks.

You have to install the Intel drivers first if I'm not mistaken. However, error code 43 means that the driver has reported problems with the device and that it has failed in some manner, so you might need to RMA your laptop :(
