hmmm...
did hp unknowingly let on to nvidia's as yet unannounced mobile gpu plans?![]()
hp part #596064-001
nvidia glm5 2gb gddr5
if so, this bodes well for the previously rumored announcement supposedly coming from alienware at the beginning of june![]()

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You sure it's not for desktop?
-
Lol, you're late!
-
-
-
Interesting, the temps are gonna be high. Lol
-
They are not high with the FX3800M under smaller heatsinks and fans (8730w, M6500, W700) so I assume there are some reserves in the cooling.
-
ASUS also had mention in their catalog of a mobile 4-series nvidia part. It did not give any more specifics other than that, and the catalog is suppose to reference all laptops in all markets for this year. So it could still be a way aways.
Sorry I dont have the link. -

As was mentioned in another thread, the nVidia GeForce 480M GTX 2GB GDDR5 DX11 MXM 3.0b 40nm is coming out in June or July. Do you want it? I was just checking to see what the demand would be for it. It will be more expensive than the Ati Mobility HD 5870. It does need 100w too!
-
of course there will be a market for it!
More info will come out at E3. Alienware will be there and im sure they will have some new features to show off... maybe even a new m17x
I just wonder if they release a new notebook with these cards if the current R2's would be able to be upgraded with the 480M's?
-
If it works on the M15x, then I may just hold out on the 5870.

Yeah, i knew that was going to be a problem. Just didn't know it was going to be that bad
Can't wait to see benchmarks of it though when it gets released -
Im an ATI guy now so I would say no thanks.
-
I'm guessing that these in SLI will be next to impossible due to the heat produced and power requirements. 5870CF will be just fine. I actually see myself playing around with eyefinity as well , Nvidia 3D gimmick is...meh. Doesn't a 100w card need something new and beyond MXM 3.0b? So aren't you going to have to wait for a completely new AW or Clevo model? "Never buy first generation tech" is a pretty good rule imo, and it would seem the 480m's may fall into that category.

Will I get it? Of course to try it. I'm not sure I will like it as much as the 5870 though. We will see. Of course the 5870 is more of a mobile GPU I think we can safely say that. -
I think I'm going to wait until June before I order another Alienware to see how these new nVidia cards play out. 100W per card exceeds the R2's current 75W limit so I don't think Alienware will go for that with their current lineup. If anything, they'll probably build a new M17x specifically for it but the question is, will it be available this June or in 2011 after Sandy Bridge?
-
but hey its just speculation...dont have inside info

The MXM standard of 75W is just on paper, nVidia can choose to break that limitation if they want. As long as the M17x bios + PSU supports it, they can throw in SLI cards that consume 200W. The problem will be heat output and knowing nVidia's recent DX11 design, those things will be a furnace.
Clevo's D901 type notebooks with massive copper cooling will be able to accomodate them but I don't see Alienware stepping up to that. More than likely there will be a cut down version designed for Alienware and everyone else that consumes a more "reasonable" 75W a piece. The question then is, will those cards be enough to beat a dual 5870 solution? My bet is no or not by much to be worth it. -

No, I want to switch back to desktop PCs and wait for Fermi's successor. Metro 2033 plays like crap on a real GTX 480
. Unless there's SLI GTX480m SLI then it's a straight pass.
-
75W is not the actual limit as Joker mentioned.
FX3800M is a 100W card and currently available in many business notebooks and also Clevo's.
The only thing we need for SLI config is a 300W PSU, lol
Personally, I'd switch to the new card down the road only if it's a 30%+ gain in performance and at the same time the price is up to 30% above the 5870s, tops.
Otherwise - -
-
They might have a single card option only. Still, depending on its performance, if it can be decently close to 4870CF or even 5870CF config, some might jump on it.
-
I think they're gonna try to see if it's viable for the M15x with a new PSU or just have it as a single option in the 17x for some time.
and EDIT yeah what Aikamox saidI mean if the 480gtx can be at the very least 15% slower then then dual 5870's it seems pretty practical to get a single 480...
-
so if they update the m17x to support sli will it also support the intel igp?
-
PM55 definitely supports SLi, it's just that Alienware hasn't programmed in the microcode for it. I don't think the 100W card from nVidia will keep up with dual 5870s, not even close. It may outrun a single 5870 by 20% or so but that's about the best you can hope for. Remember, dual 5870s with a mild OC are about as fast as a desktop 5850 or even a bit faster. There's not a chance in hell a single nVidia mobile card will be that fast and if anyone thinks so, lay off the crack.

Eurocom..yeah..so anyways. -
If the X8100 could have 480M SLI it would be a real monster. Though I'm rather in doubt as to whether 480M would even have a SLI option. However, if we were to follow the Eurocom pattern, we would have the 480M in SLI in exactly one year later.

Youd make a good.sales rep *cough* dell *cough*
So by single card you mean the 2gb one because it takes the place of sli cards? -

5770s in CF are actually better overall, if microstuttering didnt exist
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5770-review-test/14 -
Well the clocks between the two are a bit different that's why I put it at 5850 speeds. Vantage for dual 5870m at stock should put it near 5850 desktop performance (roughly 14-16k). But yeah it's inbetween the 5870 and 5850 but closer to the former than latter. It will be a very nice combo. -
Well I actually prefer nVidia but I just don't think they're going to pull it off this round. They may edge out ATi overall for the title of fastest dual card solution but at what cost? Temperature, price and power consumption play a far larger role in the notebook arena than they do desktop. -
I would like to "see" what NV has to offer providing it gets here soonish, but I'm with Joker on being doubtful it will fully live up to the hype. We'll see though. I am going to just hedge a bet that it won't take 100W per chip in SLI form. I bet that version is the workstation single card version, not the 3800 we have now, but a super 40nm up to date version of it. It's easy in the rumour mill to mix up a consumer design with a workstation one, and I suspect that much like the 285M isn't a 100W monster but the 3800 is, I tend to think the consumer version of this DX11 chip from NV will fit into normal high end power envelopes, say 75w +/- 10w, but the 100W version will be a single workstation version.
Right now the concern I have is the secrecy. If NV has something to show, they tell the world, even if it's a lab sample. You don't have to go far to see many examples of that. When they don't have much to show (remember how rather unimpressed the world was with Fermi?) you tend not to see all that much in the way of benchmarks and performance "leaks" ahead of time. This is one of those "quiet" ones, where I suspect the performance isn't all that hot.
So if ATI has the mobile drivers (and they do) and NV's chips are coming who knows when with who knows what performance, the question remains, "why bother waiting". I haven't answered the question yet myself, but I'm sure it's the question a lot of enthusiasts waiting for DX11 on the M17x are asking themselves right now.
ATI did good and they did it faster than anyone else. Credit where credit is due -
-
Well, for those still waiting to pull the trigger, I'd recommend to go with the REDs as soon as the CF is available.
Those who already have the 4870s, can easily wait and see who gets the ball, as there's really no need for an urgent upgrade with current configs.
The greed for better guns is another story though, hehe
As for the Eurocom outburst, - LOL!
Made my day.
Alas, some folks will buy that crap and preorder. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Absolutely you can't go wrong getting the 5870's crossfirex. I still may be tempted to get an SLI setup of these with the 940XM... in July???
-
I still hold to the point I sincerely doubt neither Clevo nor AW will release a new laptop that competes with its own recently released new motherboards and chassis. It will be very interesting who comes with the SLI 480 solution first, but if there's any past indicators AW and Clevo remain on even grounds minus the overclocking of AW. -
-
Eurocom is moving to 300W AC Adapters on their high end models so they can support SLI with 2x GTX 480M - each running at 100W; so they need 200W just for 2x VGA cards + another 100W for CPU/RAM/etc. They have enough TDP in some of their current models like Panther or Leopard to support single GTX 480M"
I guess it's true both AW and Clevo will be moving towards high powered PSU setups very soon...Bialic while way too early with information and orders is almost always right on things. I also trust Sleeyo's info. How heat will be managed with this setup I really can't picture it though. -
well you talk about managing heat.. if dell have anything to do with the design it will probably end up over heating and killing the GPU's... just like the good old days of the 8800 and 9800 gtx's! i really hope we dont have a repeat of that with the new gen of nvidia cards (if AW push them)
-
I would expect something to pop up at E3. At least a preview but I would be shocked if anything new is available within the next 4-5 months as far as AW is concerned.
-
I'm wondering if these new gpu's would be compatible with the 730i chipset, if so, would they be able to power them. It would be nice for the R1 owners to have something to look forward this summer too. new psu, new bios...hmmmm.
