I'd go for the new driver just because I'm always pro updating system software. I have no other justifiable reason.

They look like the desktop drivers. For the Mobility series, you're supposed to use the drivers from the manufacturer's site ( link to Gateway's driver page for your M-6864 FX). The drivers there say they are version 8.452, which I think must be based of the desktop Catalyst 8.1 drivers (version 8.451). My HD 2600 drivers from Toshiba's site are also version 8.452 and I've had no problems with them.

If you want to use the latest desktop drivers, then you can use the Mobility Modder, but I haven't used it so can't say how well it works.

Or you can use this link to download the Catalyst Mobility Driver's right off ATI's website of which 8.9 is currently out.

That appears to be the XP drivers. Where did you find the Mobility drivers on AMD's site?

No, you will need to download the desktop drivers and use the ATi Mobility Modder to modify the drivers for laptops. ATi's stance on Mobility Radeon drivers is simply to let the notebook manufacturers handle it (Even though you can find the latest XP drivers from a previous link posted).
