well my friend needs a new graphics card and i suggested the 8600gt 256MB GDDR3 to him. only thing is we don't know what kind of slot his motherboard has. like pci or pci-e or w/e the other ones are. can somebody tell me how to figure this out?

also my other questions were that will 512MB RAM be enough to support this card? and also what would be a recommended CPU so that this card could run without any problems?

btw he's running windows xp. not planning to upgrade to vista ATM.

Are we talking about a laptop or a desktop here?

512mb of RAM!??!?! you're joking right? in the year 2007? 8600 is not that powerful hardware wise, i think pentium 4 will do, and get at LEAST 1GB of RAM. i recommend getting 2gb.

i'm assuming we're talking about desktop right?

Well we are either talking about a Desktop, or he thinks he is upgrading a laptop, and that isn't happening. If it's a laptop, he is simply not upgrading anything but the RAM.

If it's a desktop, well you really need to tell us what the motherboard is. You use a slew of different programs, I personally suggest PCWizard. Until then the only real help I could give is either guess work or a build from the ground up.

Edit: And I forgot to mention that in this day and age, 1GB is like the bare min for PCs, 2GB is the sweet spot for RAM, and in the future that will only increase.
