    how would a nvidia 8400m GT rate against a radeon x550 desktop, both computers would have similar specs.

    The 8400M GT will be much faster. The X550 is basically an overclocked X300 which itself was a PCIe version of the 9600. The 8400M GT will probably perform somewhere around the desktop X1300 Pro maybe even a desktop X1300XT (renamed X1600 Pro).
