here`s my question ...
according to a spanish store
( http://www.elcorteingles.es/informatica/producto/producto.asp?referencia=15215523513 ) there seems to be such an animal as a 8600 GS with 512 MB of dedicated memory, whereas I thought that a GS is inferior to a GT, for example, and at any rate both would only have 256MB of dedicated memory...could anyone please confirm that the GS really does exist with that much memory ? ..and while we´re at the subject - is the 8600 GS or GT a reasonable card if you need graphics (architect drawings, stock charts, videos) on a 15,4 inch portable ?
thanks

I'm sure one exists, but not like it matters. I'm pretty sure either card will handle those hard to render stock charts just fine. Though the number "2" may slow down these cards.

Hi Lithus, thanks - I think - for your reply... if I am reading right between your lines, 8600 is not really the stuff dreams are made from, uh ? but you see, here in underdeveloped oldfashioned southern europe this is the most and best I can get hold of from a non-obscure source (i.e.: ebay, internet sellers located god-knows-where, etc..) - I must admit that spending 400 euros (more or less the same as 400 dollars, give or take 20% last time I looked at those stock charts..) doesn`t make sense to me on a portable in the 1.000 euro range - 40% for "just a graphic card"
..but hey, if I get a few more replies like yours, I will have to seriously start thinking about waiting another 6 month or so to find a 8.800 series fitted as standard..once the rest of the world has the cuatro..
and the montevina chip ;-) -
At this point the 8600 series by Nvidia is the best card available for a 15" notebook. Between the GS and GT, regardless of V ram, the GT would be superior given the other factors like clock speed and number of pixel pipes. And with the 8600 GS or GT, you should be fine doing what you hope to be doing
There are also several threads that you can read up:
