    Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS

    I'd like to know why my Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS is a 128 Mb video card, besides I see in the Nvidia web page that this is a 256 Mb card.

    By the way, I have a 2 GB Ram, 250 GB - 5400 rpm H.D., 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo Processors, HP Pavilion dv6500.

    The 8400M GS is a laptop card with 128mb DDR memory. This memory is recognized as double the physical value. Its a low end card, but it can play most games, albeit without the fantastic graphics + FPS.

    That is the MAXIMUM amount of memory, manufacturers are known to reduce the spec as required.

    8400M GS wont run Crysis with decent fps even on low. u'd have to overclock it to get like 5 extra fps on low in Crysis

    This is incorrect. DDR (double data rate) doubles the effective clock speed of memory, not capacity. So 128MB of DDR running at 400MHz runs at 800MHz effective; it is not effectively 256MB and will not be recognized as that.

    To answer the OP's question, 8400M GSes are on the market with varying amounts of dedicated memory attached to them. Mine has 64MB; some have 128MB or 256MB. Both Vista and XP will report more memory than is actually attached to the card, and this is due both to how Vista handles video memory and nVidia's TurboCache technology which increases the amount of memory the card can address by tapping into system memory.

    dv2500's 14.1" come with either 64mb or 128mb ram 8400m GS. As far as i know you cant get 256mb 8400m GS on it

    dv6500's 15.1" can have up to 256mb ram 8400m GS, im guessing because they have more space

    The earlier models of dv6500 i saw only came with 128mb, they must have upgraded this

    8400 GS comes in 64, 128, and 256 MB flavors. And of course Vista will allocated SRAM for graphics as it sees fit............

    If you have 128 you should be fine with most older games that require 64 or 128. Now Crysis is of course a juggernaut..........

    I'd also like to know where you got those rankings from. I'm going from an ancient 6600GT to possibly this video card, and I'd like to know what sort of improvement/decline I'd see in performance.
