    Hey guys,

Im looking to buy a new laptop and finally decided to either go for the Hp Envy 17 or toshiba qosmio x500. THe deciding factor is the graphics card.

Can you please let me know which is the better graphics card in terms of performance and also in terms of having less issues?

    thanks

They're both really similar in performance ._. But I think 5850 wins by a slight lead... Check if either of them are GDDR5 :D

If you want DirectX 11 support, the 5850 is your only choice.

5850MR in envy 17 is GDDR5, which wins 360M raw performance wise, by a huge margin.

It's a GTS not a GTX.... The 5850 has more raw power. +DX11.

5850 is not slightly faster, is a hell of a lot faster. In desktop terms its like comparing a downclocked 5770 vs downclocked 8800gt.

My Envy 17 arrives in a few hours. I'll do benchmarks and such when it gets here obviously but, just wondering out loud, how good a gaming gpu is the 5850 w/gddr5? The benches and 3dmarks I've seen are not that impressive. Are those all ddr3 units? I'm currently on a P8600 + 9800m GS, how big a leap is it going to 720qm + 5850 gddr5?

its a big leap cause your going fr cor2duo to i7 which definitely has more head room and of course better GPU = better performance.

    5850 > 335m
    360m -= 5850

both are great and a good improvement. the 360 should be if i am correct gddr5 @ least by now!

A 5850 with GDDR5 is for all practical purposes a 5870, and will blow away either the 335M or the 360M. At stock clocks (625/1000), you should get about P8,000 in Vantage; at 5870 clocks (700/1000), it delivers about P8,750; more heavily overclocked (900/1100), you can expect P10,000+. It is a serious high performance card in disguise.

thanks for the reply 'the revelator'. Out of curiosity are there any laptops that use ati 5850 in crossfire mode?

You can get 5870s in crossfire in an m17x, thats more performance than the 5850s in crossfire.

I dont think there is a system with 5850s though, but you can probably buy and install them in one.

thanks for the info thecodebreaker. unfortunately i did buy a m17x R2 in July and man oh man it started giving problems from day 1, where I couldnt even watch dvd movies or even stream online movies and had to return it for a full refund. That was one emotional week....i think ill stick to the single 5850

i think you'll be happy with it, it's a great performer.
i too have mixed feelings about crossfire/sli. great when they work, but i've always had issues with certain apps/games.

    The GTS 360M is 128-bit, GDDR5.

The Mobility 5850 is probably 25-30% faster.
