    update:
this is caused by non standard refresh rate.
if your refresh rate is anything above 60, you can edit the video.con file (under user docs bf2/2142 profile) and change the refresh rate in there to whatever yours is.
if your refresh rate is BELOW 60 (59 in my case) this will not work.

i have tried different driver sets, force refresh rate etc nothing works :(

ok. im at the end of my rope and ready to send this laptop back. bf2 and
2142 will NOT work with vista.
ive changed video drivers (tried 8 different version)
changed direct x installs (about four different versions of dx9)
updated sound drivers, disabled all the security, ran them as admin, reinstalled, tried the "single core only" command line, and varius other things.

    bf2142-
screen changes resolutions, goes black, crash.
    states renddx9.dll is the cause
in event viewer, its linked up with kernel32.dll memory.dll and a couple of others.

    bf2-
no crash, just does the same thing without crashing
    event viewer states nothing.

    any ideas?

    Hi.

try deleting 'My Documents/Battlefield 2142/mods/bf2142/cache' first. That contains the cache so you don't have to optimize shaders every time.

    regards

    John.

Check your refresh rate. It needs to be at 60hz, or the game won't start.

I've searched high and low and can't find a answer. The 60hz thing is hard coded into the game and there is no config file to change to fix it.

    right click desktop
    personalize
    display settings
    advance settings
    monoiter
then try to change the refresh rate

    if that doesnt work then
    find the program (bf2)
    right click
    properties
    compatabi;ity
    then check for xp sp2

Go into Documents>Battlefield 2>Profiles>0001 or 0002 depends which one you want to use. 0001 is the default one>Video>change the line that looks like "VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz" to "VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@59Hz"
I was having the same problem, except with 63Hz.
EDIT: Looks like Daniel G beat me to it.

BF2 and BF2142 all work PERFECTLY on Vista 32. Your irregular refreshrate is the problem.

Force refresh rate with RivaTuner...go to the "Power User" tab (where Rivatuner tells you not to change any settings), and there is a "force override refreshrate", change it from 59 to 60, check the box saying "apply settings on startup", restart you lappy and you should be ready to go.

    Happy BFing!!!

G1S and G2S users had the problem and fixed it long ago with there 62hz refresh rate. Its probably the same link above (have not checked it yet) but yeah BF2 & 2142 work in Vista fine even Vista x64.
