ok i am having a big stuttering problem with GTA IV -
here is my spec
Now i ran a benchmark on GTA IV to test out settings etc; and even on quite low settings it stutters and lags behind. Here are the results of the test of what im getting when playing the game.
The computer i am using is an Advent 8555 GX Gaming Laptop

try toning down the res a little bit. THat game is rly poorly optimized. Find your self a good config , ive seen a lot in this forum.
-
poorly optimized but it should run on med-high settings with no probs on a quad core...
did you turn your power plan on high performance?
are u using the latest patch? -
+1 for toning down the resolution.
How many FPS on default settings, and what resolution does it recommend? -
The Q9000 is enough to run GTA IV at around 30 fps on medium - high settings so I would look at the GPU to see if that is the root of the problems. I think that ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670 1GB is only a 128 bit mobile GPU?
If that is the case then it doesn't have the bandwidth needed to deal with such a high resolution. -
-
i am using the latest patch and i lowered the resolution to 800x600 which is very poor and it doesnt stutter much but you can tell that the game still isnt very fluent in gameplay.
basically at 800x600 and with the lag its not enjoyable -
What about drivers? Latest 10.3 Cats? Check with GPU-Z if the card isn't running in 2D clocks for some reason (Powerplay settings or issue)
-
-
yeh ive done that still no change though really
-
Is your laptop still new? can it be returned?
You can get a laptop that will play that game on high settings at 40 fps + easily. -
mine plays at 60 fps on very high so lappys can play it
i would point at your gpu is quite poor.
Not an ideal rig to play GTA -
4fhj: Try auto-detect settings and resolution.
I've got a dual-core CPU and a 9600M GT and it plays well enough. -

That coming from the man who has SLI 285's, of bloody course it's going to play it at 60FPS, I would be severely disappointed if they didn't.
-
Regarding the OP, we will need to see a benchmark done at 800x600 to see if the resolution is the problem. I am pretty sure that is the case. The GPU just doesn't have the bandwidth to cope with high res.
By the way, GTA IV's Auto detect settings are terrible and overly optimistic to the point of delusion. -
use fraps to monitor your exact average fps, gta4's benchmark tool is very inacurate
something's definetly wrong here, your system should be more then enough to run it good
even my cpu runs it at an anverage of 20 fps on 1024x768 and med-high settins -
i got a good pounding for saying it was poorly optimized in another thread
(even tho it is) but have u ensured you are up to date with patches to 1.4 or 1.5 i think it is? apologies if this has been covered i only skim read the lot.

GTAIV runs on Medium on my HD4570
I think his problem is a overheating problem cause a HD4670 + a quad CPU should run it at Medium to high settings and get good FPS. Download and install HWmonitior and then run it while playing GTAIV and see what temps your getting -
As for gpu, sli doesnt make alot of difference, the performance is 80% cpu based, His problem is that the gpu is far too weak to play at that res.
Either that or he has a very badly setup system -
I agree he should be running it fine i run it on highest video settings (half on the bars) and thats with a P8700 (2.53 ghz) and a GTX260m he beats me cpu wise and should be ok at medium/high

Are you sure you have patch 1.0.0.4
?
To me, all this seems like "GTAIV before patches" behavior. -

M11x playing GTA IV.
Link to the patch. -
Rofl that's horrible fps, definitely upgrade to the latest patch 1.0.0.4 and install the mods posted on my Youtube channel.
I have a dual core with a 9800m gts and I get 35+ fps on High - Highest settings in GTA 4.
I reccomend turning the traffic density down and the detail view distance down as well, those eat up a lot of resource. -
GTA IV is poorly optimised as pointed out and ur GPU is good but not excellent... 1600X900 is too high for this game.. should work well if u use 1366X768.. but if u can return this laptop and get another one , get the Sager NP8690... should run on high settings and full hd...

I've never been the one to buy a new computer because my current one won't play a game..
That W700 i'm getting to replace my old T61p that was destroyed, just will so happen to play GTA 4 nicely -
-
Just turn down the resolution.
-
-
I would try installing the latest drivers.
Your GPU looks fine and the CPU should be fine. This is another DX9 console port I believe which is heavily dependent on CPU not GPU. -
-
-
A very badly optimised game tbh i had a copy on pc i was checking on an M570RU but frame rate was far too low and graphics looked ugly at low detail (even on high detail they don't look that great imo) In the end i bought a console version of this game on ps3..
from what i remember quad core was the only thing getting high performance out of the game ur processor is good but maybe a better graphics card. Also make sure u have latest patch, drivers and a modified config i believe and turn down resolution.. -
-
i didnt read all the psot, but i want to point out that im using the Q9000 with 4gb ddr3 ram and 260m graphics and can play it jsut fine on 1600-1200 res and i think mostly high detail.

Ohhhhh sean, that's why you were saying a BestBuy G73 beats the hell out of that W700 i'm getting. I see.

-
correct me if im wrong, but ive read in some other posts that crysis and gta IV (both of which i dont play) are v poorly optimized for the ati gpu's.
also it would be wise to check gpu/cpu temps.
i remember guys mentioning the 920xm throttling at 80*c or thereabouts. that could well be your problem. -
I can't believe nobody have said this. Go to Catalyst Control and set the power option to performance mode. It defaults to power saving on quite a few computers.
only getting 9FPS on GTA IV with GOOD RIG
