I overclocked my Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT today to a
    Core clock frequency of: 630mHz
    and
a memory bus frequency of: 520mHz.

it idles at around 47-51 degrees celcius. is this an okay system tempurature for a notebook? i certianly dont want to give up the overclocking becuase it has immensly improved my FPS on Unreal Tournament 3 and Command and Conquer 3. the second after i exit a game after a 30min-1hour playing time the GPU temp registers at 55-60 degrees celcius.

    should i be concerned?

    my other system info:
    Dell Inspiron 1720
    Intel Centrino Core2Duo 2.0Ghz (T7300)
    Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT
    2Gb RAM
    120Gb 7200RPM HD

Unreal Tourney 3 FPS (1280x1024, settings maxed no AA no AF): 30-61fps

Command and Conquer 3 (1280x1024, settings maxed no aa): 25-30...solid 30 until large base and major fights.

looks ok to me but if you want to monitor GPU temps thru an OSD in game (good to do after oc'ing ) read this guide.

I've got mine at 625/525 and i o fine as well, you should be good, just if your games start to lock up/crash, then you know you need to lower it lol.

yeah thanks, so far so good....just ran a system stability test for 2 hours while i was out with Ntune and when i came back the test was over and hte temp was back down to 47...ive got my laptop propped so the fan gets more intake and im thinking of getting a cooling station for this Christmas as a treat for myself.

this over clock and recent driver update i've made has improved performance in games i play considerably. i have the 169.25 forceware and it solves alot of compatibility issues and allows for overclocking. its not a standard release got it from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

and am i getting the right results? id love to be able to play cnc3 at a higher res but at 1600x1200 it drops down to a steady 24-25fps with 1920x1200(my native res) is close to 21-24fps

Unreal Tournament is close to unplayable at anything higher then 1280x1024

    alright just got ingame stats....

    Command and Conquer 3- Skirmish
Brutal Enemy 32.5 minutes playing time

Largest battle: roughly 35-40 onscreen units, building crumble etc.
    FPS: never dropped below 28
    Ingame Tempurature
    started at 51 degrees C
ended at 60-62 degrees C...that seems pretty safe to me

I was on a custom made map, that was highly detailed, that even had a warning in the readme.txt saying low end pcs wouldn't be able to render it. lots of trees and objects= tons of shadows and shader obstacles.

My 8400gs overclocked hit 90deg straight for a few hours with no problems. It's a diff card/laptop but i've heard that the Asus G1 hits 100deg sometimes stock in extreme gaming so don't worry about the temps unless they hit 80/90+. artefact's and crashes will occur if the temp exceeds the cards designed limit anyway, you'll notice!

nice thanks, no artifacts yet, all very stable, i'm extremely happy with the results, i may bump it up but not by much to to ensure a solid 30.0 fps for CNC3, i'm not trying to run anything like crysis on this thing, i know my limits haha

    just tried Core Frequency: 650mHz
    Memory Frequency: 535mHz
and its still stable...strangly enough....it runs cooler? it flat lined at 60 never went above that
    RE: Davey
wat did you overclock that card to?

    alright just went to
    Core: 670mHz
    Mem: 550mHz
Temp topped out at 65 degrees C

trying 680 core and 566 mem now
alright looks like its not going any higher then 670/550, perhaps a few on each side, but that last set 680/566 stalled CNC3 and artifacts were all over the place

I have a 1720 as well and am getting similar temps... the only difference is that I can't overclock the memory past 450 w/o artifacts. btw, what temp monitoring program do you use? I have three installed right now just for comparison reasons and notice a 7c difference between ATI tool and Rivatuner.

    i using rivatuner......a +7 or -7 difference?

i should tell you Nvidia monitorview shows at IDLE 46 degrees and Riva shows the same, i know riva works well with nvidia stuff so it maybe ripping the info straight from that

and it is definitly overclocking the memory that is the problem, past 535 and i get errors all over the place.

I would stay at, or less than 650 for sure if it's stable. Honestly, you are risking the life of your card to gain like 1-3 fps after that point, it's not worth it. 650 is even really high itself, just go 625 or something. Even if your temps aren't getting too high, an extreme overclock like that (most people are running the 8600 at 550-575) will definitely reduce the life of your notebook.

k thanks for all your help everyone!
Took your advice comper, final set up is 625/535
does anyone know when Microsoft plans on making the first service pack for Vista? i feel like that will improve not only gaming but overall performance as well.
for gaming i made a completely stripped profile separate from the one i use for everyday activities, no wallpaper, no vista aero, no background programs, etc. and i got a pretty big performance increase, i suggest doing that for anyone who has vista.

SP1 for Vista , the official release, will be somewhere in Feb 2008. Until then, you can try the SP1 RC (release candidate) from microsoft site.

thanks alot! is that less buggy then the current windows update, i forget the release code....but recently windows update told me to download the most recent thing, but it made things more buggy for me then before, and it wont let me system restore! the entire network system for windows (connect to a new network, network control panel, etc,) doesnt work at all and i just have restart my computer to reset my internal network card.

can anyone please help... i cant push the memory shader above 451 because it just causes the game to crash after 5 mins... the temp is about 50C at this point so why the hell is it crashing?

People in this thread are pushing theirs above 600 lol and i can barely manage 450... HELP!

i have issues getting the memory any higher then 535, are you using rivatuner, ntune or something else?

....and its not the memory frequency that were pushing to 600 its the core clock freq.

also, jsut ran a quick test. i overclocked it to the same settings with rivatuner and experienced game lockup after about 7-10 min of play. i suggest you use Ntune (nvidia's stock overclocking software) to overclock, as it seems to be more stable, for this card at least.

    my temps are now:
    IDLE: 48-50C
    LOW 3D: 54-58C
    HIGH 3D: 63-66C

    Final stats:
CNC3 (1440x1050): level 8AA, settings maxed....solid 30fps on most maps. higher detailed/big battles never drops below 25fps which is still very playable

Unreal Tourney 3 (1600x1200): noAA Texture Detail 4, World Detail 3, Screen Percentage 75%.....FPS range on most maps 45-61FPS
ill get more game related stuff up here once i test them out.

once i get a cooling station it should be much lower, for now ive got it propped up on a book for better air intake/dissipation

yeah lax i use ntune, but i was always told the memory freq is the one that gives the biggest performance boost, not the gpu clock. Is this true? man some ppl are sp lucky, and mine isnt even hot

im not sure on that, it would make sense, but honestly ive had my my core clock all the way up to 670 and it only reaches 66C with a few FPS difference....so im just keepin it at 630/535. when ever i try any higher then that with memory freq. i get artefact's and have to restart.

like comper up top said, its really not worth 2-3FPS for your GPU to fry in a month, im still got a huge performance increase over the stock card at 550/490, where im at now is just my comfy zone. i sent it through 3 hours of stability test using nvidia, and at least a good 2 hour session of gaming yesterday playing both CNC and Unreal and it plowed through it. i still plan on getting a cooling station though just for safety.
