Hello, I'm starting this thread because I would like to know who has overclocked their gts 160m and what the clockspeeds are :D

    My system:

    MSI-1651-ID2
    p8700 2.53 GHz
    gts 160m
    320GB Seagate Momentus 7200rpm
    4GB Kingston ddr3 1066
    Vista ultimate sp1
    nvidia forceware 179.65

    The test:

    3dmark settings 1280x800 no AA
Turbo mode ON @ 2.93 GHz
    Overclocked with Nvidia system tools

    forceware 179.65

    Impressions

Well, numbers don't lie and I guess (hope) it is because of bad driver support
This card doesn't overclock well at all.
I hope nvidia will bring better driver support to this card soon.

This was with the first attempt, graphic card was 100°C on average during the tests, idle 47°C

*update* With the 186.42 forceware drivers 3dmark06 scores jumped up almost 150 points on stock, but still, when you overclock, performance/points are dropping a lot

    Game benchmarks

Need for speed carbon on MAX settings (FRAPS)
    min 58
    max 78
    avg 68

GTA IV benchmark, all settings high, view distance 26 (can't go higher) vsync on
    results
    average fps: 30.65
    CPU usage: 95%
    system memory usage 91%
    video memory usage 81%

    Left 4 Dead benchmark (FRAPS)
    min 35
    max 104

Yup got it 2 days ago
I've put zalman cooling paste on it yesterday so probably temps will slowly become better.

The Geforce GTS 160M is a renamed Geforce 9800M GTS so it should pretty much overclock the same way. Your results are pretty odd though. :p

You should keep core : shader in a 1 : 2.5 ratio. Performance is usually best that way.

I know, thats what I do with my desktop :p
but when I put it like that with my laptop I get the device lost error in
    3dmark06 after 3 seconds... It's weird that I cant overclock it. :(

I've been wondering what kind of mxm factor that card is. Possible to take some pictures?

    @Starflight

If that happens, then your GPU is telling you to stop overclocking it since your shaders are probably at their limits.

3DMark06 should only serve as the very basic stability tests. To really check for stability, go run Furmark at native rez, 8x MSAA, at Extreme burn in mode for an hour or longer. If you don't get a BSOD or artifacts don't pop up or temps don't go through the roof, then its fine.

As stated before the Geforce GTS 160M is a rebranded Geforce 9800M GTS so they're both MXM lll cards.

    Really?
I thought that because the MSI-1651-ID2 was a 15.4" notebook that used to come with a MXM-II 9600M GT (IIRC), that the GTS 160M was a MXM-II card as well.
Some conclusive photo evidence would be spiff.

I know that, but that happens when I overclock only 40MHz.
It's not possible that that is the limit

    @Starfight

Every GPU is different. Some can overclock while others cannot.

Getting errors like that is pretty indicative of pushing past your GPU's limit unless you raise the voltages.

Just letting you know.....you're gonna have to weigh the decreased hardware life versus the rather minimal increases in performance.

Perhaps you should isolate your shader/memory clocks and just try overclocking the core. Then do the same for the shader and memory clocks and find out which component is causing the crashes.

No need to OC the GPU, it's a pretty capable card on it's own.
Your temps are really high so I would say stick to stock speeds and use the TURBO mode to OC the CPU if you want to do any overclocking.
My MSI 1651 ID2 with a T9900 (TURBO ON) gets the score below :D
My CPU temps topped out at 91c (core 1) and 93 c ( core 2)
GPU temps topped out 85 c but that's only when I run 3DMARK 06, during gaming the max I have seen was 82 c and that was after a few hours of playing PROTOTYPE.
I did apply AS5 and temps will probably lower a bit once it fully cures.
Just to play it safe I ordered a ZALMAN 2000 laptop cooler that's coming in a few days.
If you guys want I can post some temps with and without the cooler to see how effective it is.

@IKAS V: The Nvidia page also says that the 9500M GS comes with GDDR3 memory, but that's not true either, is it? It's up to the individual OEMs to make the MXM cards anyway - that's how the GTX 280M has ended up in both MXM-B and MXM-IV form factors, thanks to Clevo.
And trust me, I know what an MXM-B card looks like - the card connector goes the entire length of the card with a notch in the middle. Clearly, not what this pic shows.

@Darth Bane: I know, and besides I don't have the cash to acquire one if I wanted to.

OK! just pointing out the specs on what Nvidia has on there website.
    LOL!
    Exactly!
I asked my reseller for one and he told me individual cards are not for sale( for now anyway)
