    hey

a few posts have mentioned how toshiba underclocks their gpu's

    i have a toshia A100-JH2 which has a X1600

im curious if i can overclock this and get rid of these lines that appear on my screen when im gaming... even low resolution. They are clear ripples that move up and down the screen every one is a while. Is this the vid card? Or is this just what comes with gaming on a laptop?

how can i over clock comfortably and not burn my gpu.

also... does anyone know if i did burn my gpu would best buys performance plan cover it?

    thx h4n

    Its probably your vid card
Overclocking is modding, so Best Buy plan probably would not cover it

Ok, what drivers are you running at? Omega drivers or ATi Catalyst? Omegas are able to push the 1600 alot better supposedly than the stock drivers. But there is a risk of damaging the GPU due to excessive heat.

This is perfectly normal - your LCD can only display so many FPS (frames per second) on the screen at a time. You are getting those lines because the GPU is producing more than can be displayed (which is 30), and thus you get image tearing. Meaker made a great thread here about it:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=63974

Overclocking your card will not get rid of these lines. I wouldn't overclock your video card . . the X1600 is very powerful to begin with.

wow, thanks for the link Chaz that clears things up alot. How ironic, the gpu is too powerful for the screen. Where a weaker card would probably run the game more comfortably by default. So, Im definitiyly not overclockin this card if anythin i need to underclock it, ha. You think im better off with veritcal synch or should i be tweaking ini files to cap refresh rate. Do you know if fps and hertz should be equal? Would tearing occur as soon as the fps exceeds hertz? Im just wondering the max fps i should be aiming for go minimize tearing and maximize smoothness. I play quick games like unreal tournement.
    ill be experimenting.
    thx again

A 60Hz refresh rate, which 99% of laptops have, displays 30FPS max. Unless the lines really bother you, I wouldn't cap the framerate.
If you want to cap it, I'd turn on Vsync.

60hz = 60fps unless your gfx chip falls below 60fps, then it jumps to 30fps with vsync enabled.

actually I lost performance when going to the omega drivers. Worked great but the actual drivers(newest from ati) worked slightly better.

I wouldnt recomend OC'ing anotebook due to heat, less battery life and voiding warranty. Plus youll probly see more of a performance jump with a new cpu and ram while maintaing all the rest.

new cpu??? can you change cpu on laptops? or you mean buy a new computer...

I unstalled the newest ati mobile drivers and they seem to be running well.

    ANother question.

Doom 3 has a option to have scan for the optimal hardware to help choose settings. When i had the gateway mx7525 (ati x600 128mb+128mb shared, 2.6ghz athlon mobile 1 gig ram, 4200rpm hd) the option would always choose high quality no matter what the resolution. With my toshia A100 ( ati x1600 128mb, 1.66 duo core, 1 gig ram, 5400rpm hd it only pics medium settings. I found this very disapointing? Is the extra 128 of shared video memory doing this? is this a mistake of some sort?

    any ideas?

I really don't think it's the shared memory doing this because I've always thought that it's the dedicated which counts (open for correction). How is the performance of the game on your gateway compare to the toshiba when you manually adjust the settings to high?

they both appear to run fine. I cant really notice a difference.

i cant figure it out. not only do the quality set to medium but the resolution also drops to the lowest if i manual select the highest quality.

I hope this a glitch or somethin. I traded the gateway for the toshiba thinkin it be a better performer for games.

Im sure there are laptops out there that you cant upgrade the cpu. My averatec wasnt easy, but it was identicle to removing a cpu in a desktop. Most new pc's have a cover on the bottom you can remove to veiw the cpu, ram and such. When I went from a 1.6ghz turion ati 200m(integrated) to a 2.2ghz turion I gained about 100 3dmarks (2005) and game play greatly increased. Granted a 1.6ghz core duo is no slouch or boittle neck, but upgrading to a faster cpu will process things like sound and such much faster then before, allowing for better game play. Good luck!

i checked prices for upgrading cpu.... whoa expensive stuff. I dunno guys maybe im nuts. Sometimes doom runs great on ultra high high res and other times i get tearing and studdering. Im gonna try and run that 3dmark 03 that seems to be so popular and see what happends.
Does more ram fix everything, this lappy goes up to 4 gigs of ram

Yes, when in doubt, go for more ram.
