Looks no different than when I had to buy extra Halo 2 map packs, even after I payed for the game and I payed MS for my Xbox Live. I wouldn't call it p2p even, it's "pay for extra content", from the sounds of the article; in addition to it technically being all speculation from Pachter.

    That would be completely LAME!

I think Activision would have people storming their complex.

Right it is speculation, but it should come as no surprise when Activision is involved in gouging.
Either way I doubt this will work except for maybe the hardcore console base followers.

The idea actually works pretty well. Valve's been using microtransactions in Team Fortress 2 for a while now, and that's pretty much what Activision wants to do with Call of Duty.

It's all in the grand scheme of trying to turn gaming into a service rather than a product.

I'm not so sure. I mean, Activision has been selling '5 maps (2 of them copied and pasted from MW)' for 15 bucks since MW2 with a good rate of success. I think it is the next evolutionary step in milking people with the franchise... until it dies more or less like Guitar Hero.

Except that in TF2, it didn't come until the game had been out for nearly 3 years with free updates, still gets free updates even now, and you can still enjoy the game without buying anything. Knowing Activision, that won't be the case with CoD.

That's because Valve uses TF2 as a testbed for introducing all sorts of ideas and seeing which ones work. Activision knows that microtransactions can work, so there's not really a need for them to poke around before introducing it. There's also no suggestion that the microtransactions would be mandatory for COD either.

But I'd bet money that they'd greatly affect the balance (and overall experience) of the game.

I don't think Activision is really left with any other choice but to charge more for CoD. Consumers have proven over the last 4 years that they will consume anything and everything with the CoD stamp on it. Raising the price of games to $60 didn't slow anyone down, and their multiple DLC packs which many consider a "scam" sell like crazy.

Activision must to test the market to find its breaking point, and consumers have shown that it is definitely not at $60 game + $60 in DLC + ~$50 subscription to play it online. If you don't like the idea of $100 games with $50 DLC packs and $15 a month subscriptions, then stop buying Activision products.

The last CoD game I played was MW1. I haven't missed MW2 or BO, and any type of subscription model will make my decision not to buy the next one that much easier.

I am a fan of one time purchases. I usually don't do DLC unless it's bundled with a game during a sale, and I sure as hell won't do subscriptions. Definitely when I already paid to buy the game in the first place.

Call of Duty 4 killed the series for me and fortunately for me I also lost the disk and the CD Key for it somewhere. :D

Although a bit extreme, definitely that is the case. Activision (like many other companies) are probing how far they can go to milk a franchise. We will see how this works out.

From a business point of view I can completely see what they want to do, it's all about the profit margin for the most part.

I'm sure some in the company would love to be known for their amazing games and loyalty to customers, but then you have the ones who could care less. I'm sure to those, it's a matter of seeing just how much they can squeeze out of each person before they start to see a drop in profit.

I'm not saying it's right, but it just seems like a typical business to me. I haven't bought a COD game since MW1, everything after that just seemed like too much of an arcade-shooter to me.

The sad thing is that the second those sales drop, hundreds of people will lose their jobs.

Following in the footsteps of Valve, EA, and Crytek with the free to play model, its unfortunate it doesn't work because of pricing, Id much rather have 1 game last me 3 years with constant map updates rather then drop 60 bucks a year for a new game with a multiplayer of 8 maps.... Tired of it.

Hahahaha...Aww man. If this project comes to fruition I will never ever even consider buying a COD game again (and that is only consideration). I'm already finding it hard enough to justify having bought essentially the same game year in and year out, since COD4. I honestly feel like Activision will kill this game, they are already well into the process of doing that. It's a shame, COD4 was the first one I bought and I loved that game, legitimately prestiged all the way to 10 and all that. Now after a couple years of essentially the same thing, has the franchise really progressed? Yes they've made bucket loads of mullah, but what else? Black Ops is the last COD game I'm buying and I can assure you that (whoever cares to listen :)). Bring on RAGE...now that's a refreshing looking game.
