many people may know of this, but its a cool article. Looks like many big companies are getting together to form an alliance to save pc gaming from dying, mainly from the consoles.

edit: they even have the official website for the alliance

Wow. They actually admit system requirements are a big problem.
Consoles are becoming more popular because they're cheaper and easier to use. -
consoles suit the market. casual fun gaming. it is not as intense and its not so steriotypically nerdy. i will play pc games for ever though

It would be great to standardize the whole PC gaming market WITHOUT Microsoft at the helm. The "Games for Windows" initiative was ok, but self serving and not very stringent at following up with vendors and helping them to add appropriate displays etc.
System Requirements too is a biggie. I tend to have a fairly high end rig, but now that 90% of my PC time is on a laptop, I can see myself needing/wanting lower "playable" system requirements.
Anyhow, lets hope this is the start of something decent. -
I really hope this works out. The PC iswhere innovation in gaming really has a chance. Console titles all have such huge financial risk and so much editorial control from publishers and console makers that innovation is really stifled.

Yeah. Hopefully this consortium (alliance, whatever) will create a standard developer's kit for the novie programmer. That's what I miss about the 1980's and 1990's. Any average Joe programmer could make a half way decent game, mainly because languages like BASIC existed that made it fairly simple. Now things are so complex. You need a team of 3D artists, AI programmers, audio group, and millions of dollars of software licenses to develop a game.
