I just oc'ed my 8400m gs from 400/600 to 500/800 and got a 2 degree temp rise (to 86) and no fps increase. Using 169.04 drivers and ntune. The oc is detected by both rivatuner and ntune utility when I checked. I have no artifical benchmarks to test with. Just using the first level of quake 4 and running through a bit and seeing what the fps is using fraps. Should I have got a increase or am I wasting my time?

lol I just tested cod4 with the oc and got lower scores than I get with new drivers. So the oc is worse than the updated drivers.

169.21 and 169.28 works fine with OC here.

Personally, I get a nice FPS boost by overclocking my X1600 256mb a tad bit.

Stock clocks are 450/370 but I OC to 500/490 and I get noticeably better and smoother gameplay in COD4 and other games.

    Using ATI Mobility Catalyst 7.12.

Now you got me curious. What about temps? and what laptop do you have, cause I have an nx9420 with the x1600 and if I could get a better performance from it, why not...the problem is that the thing tends to get warm all over even without OCing...

My GPU does not have a temperature sensor and I don't think yours either, however with a 500/490 overclock your temps should be just fine.

    I have an Asus S96J with a Mobility Radeon X1600 256mb GDDR2.

I was wondering what temps the GPU might be the max for the x1600, since I want to use this laptop mostly for my school work and such, being far more mobile than my 5791. And the ocasional gaming around would be nice, if the GPU was up for it.

    Probably no more than 90c.

I checked my CPU temp after gaming with OC and it was 73c. No idea about the X1600 but I did not get any artifacts or lock ups so it must be fine.

the truth of the matter is that temp. is only a secondary indicator of gpu OC problems. you should see artifacts before your temps go way out of whack.
