thats pretty much the same thing, they are still communicating as SLI or XFIRE even if there is two on one board.

so there is not an answer, but they are the same thing.

    Its the same thing......
Whats the difference if you put two hotdogs on a plate, or put them on two separate plates, they still taste the same and do the same thing... (Sorry, I'm hungry...)

What it REALLY depends on is, which cards they are.

Yes essentially they are the same thing in that if the game does'nt support SLI your second GPU wont show a difference

but it IS better to have 2 in one card because then you dont need to worry about the messy SLI stuff with the PSU and is it slike slightly (like very very very very slightly?) faster becasue the GPUs are closer together? not that it would make a real world difference, maybe someone can correct me

but 2 GPUS on one card still saves you with messing with SLI and stuff

SLi and CrossfireX are as simple as putting two cards in the PCIe slots and slapping on a thin bridge between them, for notebooks it's the same thing because I doubt you'll ever have to touch the hardware inside.

The drivers still work the EXACT same way. You still have to enable or disable dual GPU's the same way. Performance is exactly the same, and the wattage consumption is nearly the same as two physical cards. The only advantages are the size, and for those who want Quad SLI. Crossfire wouldn't need two dual cards since it supports up to 4 physical cards in their own PCIe slots.

it might be more convenient for the end user to have them on one card.

    maybe.
