    possiblilty to "upgrade" to the orange box?

    I bought TF2 never thinking I would ever want to try portal or half life or any of the other games included in the orange box. Now though, I want to try portal but since I have TF2 already, is it possible to "upgrade" TF2 into the orange box? I dont really want to pay for TF2 twice..

    Not really. Valve is having a sale - all Valve games for $100, which includes all Half-Lifes, Counter Strikes, and a bunch of other stuff.

    Yep, sadly no. Kinda like how I already owned HL2 and Ep 1 but it was still cheapest for me to buy orange box to get Ep 2, Portal, and TF2 then to get them individually. You get a gift, where you can give the game you already own to another account for free, so you could maybe sell that for half price or whatever. I just gave HL2 to a friend.
