Company of Heroes hands down, everywhere.
World of Conflict is good, but the hardware requirements are higher (without better graphic delivering) and the campaign less interesting. -
RA3 has been said to be a bit dissapointing, but on the other hand, CoH is great.
If your not sure you can DL the demos first:
Company of Heroes
World in Conflict
I find Gamershell to have very fast DL speeds, hope you have the same results.

I played CoH, and beat WiC, never played red alert 3 though. I didn't really like CoH after playing one level of it. I took over in the middle of a mission that someone else was playing so I haven't started from the beginning, but it just seemed like the game was overly forced, and you didn't actually have alot to strategize about.
WiC was a bit more fun, but again, the entire game was too forced. In each level you have a pre set number of units of a pre set type, and it's all basically capture this point, hold this, wait.. take out these etc.. It's just so easy and simple to me. It's like they just took the challenge and strategy part out of old RTS's, it's just simple it's kindof dumb.
I much more prefer the old RTS style, which was usually pretty straitforward, this is where you start, you have a few units and a builder unit, make a base/bases, branch out and dominate the map to win. Different levels have different scenarios and preset enemies while also allowing them to build and advance if you wait. I loved it, this newer stuff bores me. I'd say the best RTS's are, Starcraft, all of the AOE games, the original Rise of nations, the dawn of war games, and so on. That's why I'm really looking forward to StarCraft 2, and don't care in the least about DOW 40K 2 because SC2 is keeping to the old traditional style gameplay while DOW 40K 2 is going the route of CoH/WiC etc. -
unknown thanks for your detailed response, i agree i really enjoyed AoE red alert2 etc, but ive played them both to death and want something with slightly better graphics and gameplay, perhaps you should give CoH alittle more time as playing through half a level isnt really going to allow you a good idea of the potential of a game.
based on your description of WiC i will be giving it a miss thx for that.
anyway im still after one more rts to add to company of heroes, any suggestions of games that arnt on the list would be great.
thanks and take care. -
If you like spacey RSTs then the Dawn of War quadlogy is a good way to go.
However I wasnt a fan of the 4th one (Soulstorm).
DoW -
ill go look at afew reviews of DoW quadlogy and see what i think.

I picked up Company of Heroes back when it first came out and I LOVED it. It was a bit different than what I was used to but I enjoyed the graphics, the plot and the controls. It reminded me of when I used to play oldschool C&C Red alert, only beefed out.
Not sure how it functions as a multiplayer game though. I only messed around with it by myself. -
as long as it has a good single player story and the skirmishes are fun ill be a happy camper.!

What I loved too is that even a couple weak units, when used with precision and skill, can take out one of the more powerful units. I liked this because it showed that it isn't just an arms race and that you can out-skill your opponent if your good enough.
Example: You can take out a tank with a few lucky infantry guys with some throwable explosives, a good stakeout and alot of luck.
Almost every object and all the terrain is dynamically altered during battle, and there's a huge focus on formation and cover advantage etc. Every little thing helps and because of that detail, the game rocked. -
still waiting to see what you guys think about sins of a solar empire!♠ -
Sins of a solar empire is an amazing game. It is L.O.N.G. Though. A single game can last between 2-6 hours depending on how many people there are. I didn't have the patience or time to do that. I liked the deathmatches in AoE, where the entire match would be done and over in 30 minutes.
When you get into it though, it is a very very good game. The only downside is that there's no campaign. The only single player is a bunch of skirmishes, and then there's a multiplayer part over the internet too. I haven't played it online, but I've heard that it's good. -

Here's a review of Company of Heroes by Gamespot.com
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/companyofheroes/review.html
and IGN's
http://pc.ign.com/articles/732/732059p1.html
(edit: added IGN's review) -
Hmm, After reading Gamespot's review, I think I might go pick the game up for myself. So it does use the classic RTS style? Like AOE, DoW 40K etc.?
-
Sorry if that's a bit confusing, I'm a tad tired and about to sleep  -
No, that doesn't sound confusing, I'm downloading the demo right now, though 1.8GB for a demo is pretty insane, atleast the download speed isn't too bad with this link http://www.gamershell.com/download_15378.shtml
I really hope the demo is decently long to make up for this 20 minute wait.. -
-
Don't get RA3! I'm still forcing myself to finish that game. Get any of the other two....they are both great!
-
I think you'll like, it's very good. -
company of heroes gets real competitive since you dont want to screw up your profile win/loss ratio and rank. Almost to a point where your heart is pounding during the load screen. There are numerous connection issues too and long load times on games > 4 players. But its all worth it in 1v1.

One of my favourite RTS is BattleZone 2 along with Fleshstorm and forgotten enemies mods.
Out of all of my RTS and even the more recent games, I find none of them are played as much as the original Tiberian Sun with the Total War Mod.
I play mostly skirmish modes and I find the most stability playing all of them within a virtual machine as opposed to my actual Laptop directly. -
well im still looking for one more rts game to add to company of heroes, all suggestions welcome thanks! -
was tiberian sun released after generals or before. i enjoyed generals but would have liked to see more units available. and the campaign wasnt the longest either. -
Company of Heroes is a decent game also, RTS wise its like the origional command & Conquer. However the expansion for it was terrible, and useless. Perhaps mods will make it better.
World in Conflict again is decent attempt at an RTS also, I enjoyed playing it but however single player mod is disappointing. However it is a variety game, and is pretty good.
I prefer playing Warcraft 3 for RTS, the mods are decent and you can probably find it cheap. I love real time strat games, been buying them for 10 years or more and I prefer the older games to newer, most newer like company of heroes have for example small girly maps with only 10 units, and less likely to be moded.
Some older games I play that are RTS like Cross of Iron, its a conversion of close combat, the AI sucks but the gameplay is pretty awesome for its time.
Warcraft 3 still is my fav RTS even though I prefer ww2 RTS games.
If I had to buy one of the 3 I would say Company of Heroes, or even check out medieval 2.
M2 is a board game, that combat is done in real time, or automatic if you want to skip. Its something like World at War, you can plan your troops out, and move them to attack and either command the battle yourself or decide not too and auto it. Sadly I have been wanting a WW2 game made like this, yet only thing that has come close was Close Combat 4, where you had battlegroups and moved them around the map to engage as you wanted too.
Dunno if you checked out Sins of a Solar empire, its an RTS thats updated and plays wonderful, its pretty complex also but its an excellent RTS with lots of mods available right now. -
read above as to why im not interested in sins of a solar empire, but basically i get very bored with space battles.
well im definately getting company of heroes which i believe is set in ww2, are there any newly released games that are like AoE, with improved graphics etc, as i enjoyed that series greatly. -
Well problem with every RTS even in company of heroes they have heroes, for example the Tiger tank for the germans, once you get it - its pretty much a hero unit, trying to destroy it (not in the expansion) is a pure hell. In the expansion you get the option for 17 pound Anti-tank gun, but germans counter with the Nebelwerfer artillery. In the regular game playing american Paratroopers are great, untill the german player gets a Tiger tank then your pretty much boned.

You should download that link I posted on page 2 if you have the bandwidth for it, or don't mind waiting if your on slow net. It completely swayed my opinion of the game, I think I'm going to go out and buy it. It feels very much like a WW2 version of DoW 40K. Somewhat like Oblivion is like compared to Fallout 3, you can tell it's the same engine and there's alot of similarities, but it's also very different. Playing the entire demo of CoH was alot more fun than playing WiC IMO.

I still strongly recommend Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, I agree with you when you say they have their similarities too. -
just want to double check, will it run well on my notebook?
