I am thinking of buying 980m laptop for 1800 and a ps4 for games like gta v and far cry 4. will ultra 1080p look better on pc or is it all the same. I was wondering about the near future also will games simply look identical for 5 years but requirements boosted, and will they simply be cookie cutter ports like the last gen? If its going to be like the last gen im skipping pc gaming and keeping my current laptop and waiting for 1080p onlive support.
my opinion is last gen games were close to 720p and had pretty nice visual especially gran turismo 5, I did have 7970m and played dirt 3 at 1080p and did not notice the 2000 dollar gap in perormance(30fps vs 60fps) and did not see anything major in terms of graphical upgrades while gaming on pc, it was slight at best!
So I beg for someone to look for pc vs console this gen and show us the world what the differance is and how its justified buy spending 1800 every 2 years?

If you sit back really far away from your television, you won't notice much difference.

Around the beginning of every generation I notice the consoles get a little closer, and by the end they've fallen off. I prefer PC, laptops mobility specifically. If that's something that interests you, it may be worth it. If you are just going to sit the laptop on a desk and never use it outside the home (or rarely use it outside the home- you've got to be honest with yourself) then a console or desktop would probably be better. Since a few friends of mine routinely LAN, I find the most effective thing is a gaming laptop. I don't want to haul a desktop + monitor or console and small TV over to their house for a weekend, so for me the laptop is the perfect solution. I also have the ability to work remotely, so the laptop factors in there as well (holidays at families out of state, etc.) but in the end only you can decide that.

interesting perspectie, thanks
I think ill stick it out for a few more years -
Most PS4 ports are usually about High PC settings with some corners cut and bad frame rates. Metro redux on PS4 didn't look half as good in some areas. The big difference is frame rate. But if you can't see any value in playing a game at 60fps over 30fps then there may not be much point for you
I don't mind spending money on hardware I can keep rather than console subscriptions and tolls. Add those charges up over the consoles life span and it's suddenly not such a money saver. -

The 980M PC will look better at ultra.

Don't see the point in metro redux on ps4. Truly a downgrade from the original PC versions in every way

There is a large gap this time round. Last gen 360 and ps4 used fairly ground breaking tech at time of release. This gave them a little future proofing and longevity.
This time the tech used isn't remotely groundbreaking. At time of release there are many midrange laptops that have similar or more graphics and processing power. Already outdated I am afraid. -
IMO, this is 2014 and graphics are more than good enough on either platform. Obviously pc with 980m will be better but its not like you're going to be disappointed by ps4.

This console generation has been disappointing enough as it is. There's no sense in trying to justify mediocrity or paint an unrealistically rosy picture. Then you're just lying to yourself. The sooner everyone acknowledges and accepts the fact that PC is the supreme gaming platform, the sooner these silly little Internet discussions and arguments can stop and everybody can move on and just enjoy playing games on whatever device they prefer.
And FYI, by current-gen consoles I mean strictly XB1 and PS4. Wii U is exempt.TBoneSan likes this. -
Good god this is still up for debate?
The PS4 has an AMD Pitcairn Pro class GPU with 4-6Gb of VRAM coupled with some Bobcat cores. Add +25% extra performance for the console low level optimizations and you get the rough visual performance. -
Got to love the logic behind choosing PC architecture this console generation, though.. "Hey, we need PC architecture, because more RAM means more fps!". Then "And it also makes sure that multiplatform/console port releases will be much better than before!". Until "Except now we're going to turn all the visual effects off and the resolution down to reach anywhere near the 60fps we wanted in the first place!".

Consoles don't stand a chance against PC. Even in price PC just smacks the PS4 and XBONE in their faces, breaks their legs and laugh at them. There is like almost no reason to buy a console, even more this gen than it was last gen.
-
Yeah, well, people buy them even when they're demonstrably being ripped off. And a considerable amount of ..people.. from a certain country, in surveys.. actually /want/ a "paywall" to the online service, etc.
The entire thing with Sony dropping the approach they've had to hardware from the ps1 to the ps3 - is a plain observation of the fact that they can copy Microsoft, sell cheap hardware for a premium that offers.. nothing, and have people buy it. The ps4 also goes on to sell better than the ps3 as well as the xbone.
So clearly the market wants to be cheated with a sub-par product, so Sony can spend less money on actual production, and take more profit back to make.. more sub-par products.
And who can possibly object to that? They're earning money, and we don't get good products any more. But enough people don't care. Microsoft proved it was so, Sony perfected it.1nstance likes this.
