is it possible to add a new sound card (possibly a creative x-fi) into my hp pavillion dv9000? I know I can't add a graphics card since it's onboard but I was wondering if the same problem applies to sound cards as well.

I no expert with this topic, but i'm almost positive that the sound card is soldered to the motherboard and can not be replaced. But I think you can get external sound cards.

If the notebook has an Express slot (most 2007 notebooks do) then you can add the X-Fi. But I don't recommend the X-Fi it has too many compromises.

Rather, try a USB soundcard like Audio Advantage SRM or M-Audio Transit. Or for something simple, use Audio Advantage Amigo.

But none of these will give a considerable improvement over the onboard sound quality (also depending on your particular sound chip); onboard sound has steadily evolved over the past few years, and the external cards haven't really kept pace.

the only reason to get an external card and bypass the onboard sound is if you need 5.1 or something for a home theater.

otherwise, you're not going to notice a difference at all... unless you're one of those people who has to EQ every song because they've tricked themselves into thinking they're some kind of audiophile.

a nice set of external speakers or headphones is all you need.
