    Hi, I got a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia quadro fx 570m display adapter. As far as I know this card is most optimized for using in 2D graphics. But I think it is obvious to get at least 100fps (constant) in a few year old Counter Strike 1.6. The problem is, while playing at 1280x1024 (or any other) resolution there are some short fps falls to around of 60-70. Of course those are not completely random, I think caused by some rendering overload when a lot of 3d models are displayed, but why so high? I mean, game is too old to get the GPU to slow down - I think. Even a bit.
    For a comparision, on my PC:

    *Sempron 2800+ 64,
    *GeForce 6600GE 128MB/128bit,
    *1 GB RAM 333MHz,

    the game runs 100FPS constantly. I tried to run the GeForce 8600GT drivers, but nothing significant happens. I don't want to overclock it, because I think this is not the solution. GPU-Z during the playing shows the highest frequencies of GPU and memory of the quadro. Does anyone had that kind of performance falls?

    thanks for replies in advance

    45^C idle, after about an hour of gaming 60^C (both CPU and GPU have approximately the same temperatures)

    Turn off vertical sync if you haven't (in both CS 1.6 and GPU settings)

    @Satyrion: because I'd like to. ;]

    The issue is about the performance, why a Semrpon 2800 & gf6600GE PC station runs that old game faster than my T61P notebook, I ask?
    Why CS:Source runs at about 150 fps, with a few falls when overloaded to a 50-60 fps, and CS 1.6 runs so slow?

    @firstwave: The vertical sync is off, I'm running on an external CRT LG 915FT display, and I can't get more than 85Hz refresh rate from my 570M (I don't know why?), so I turned off the vsync to get more than 85 fps in game.

    Okay i see, well CSS seems to run better than CS on new hardware. Tsk for example my low end x3100. I runs CS1.6 at 25 fps average and CSS at 35 FPS average.

    I think the new cards is not optimized for these old games very well.

    Same as i run Diablo 2 in Direct 3d sometimes at 6 FPS while Titan quest which is 10 year newer runs at average 30 FPS.

    Yeah, because D2 runs at D3D, and Titan Quest I guess at OpenGL mode, so the OpenGL mode runs a lot faster for new nvidia cards. But I don't belive those new cards are "not optimized", even if, there would be some update on steam for CS 1.6 engine to be compatibile, so far many gamers are buying new hardware AND still playing 1.6, eh?

    yeah, people still play 1.6 with new rigs. just cap the FPS at where it's dropping, like 60 or 70, and you won't worry about the drop.

    perhaps force an older version of DirectX on 1.6.

    Why so? 85% of the time i got >120 FPS, only when recieving some smoke on the display or multiple 3d player models the FPS gets down
