i just ordered a notebook with an nvidia quadro nvs 140m graphics card and vista OS. i asked to have it run windows XP instead but i was told that it is impossible because the nvidia graphics card is not compatible with windows XP. can anyone here please confirm or deny the validity of this? i went on nvidia's site and they dont have support info for this graphics card model. thanks for any help.

Even if the official XP drivers don't (yet) support the card, the tweaked ones from TRU or laptopvideo2go most certainly will by the time you get your laptop (T/R61, I assume?). Whoever told you that it's impossible to run XP with the card is mistaken...since the basic architecture is the same as the GeForce 8400, which obviously can be used with XP (and 2000, for that matter).

Initially the r61 and t61 had windows xp as an option, so there must be official drivers.
If you check on the nvidia website neither the vista nor the xp drivers list the nvs140 as supported.

If it is one of the other friendlier manufacturers you could always ask for a rebate for the copy of windows, people were getting ~$50 from Dell when they asked.

With regard to the T61, I was speaking with a Lenovo sales agent earlier this week I got this information on the ThinkPad T61. Looking at the website, there are two base models with similar pricing and the only difference I could see was the graphics card (Intel GMA X3100 GM965 w/ 1394 vs. nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M). The agent confirmed that this was so and that if I wanted to purchase with XP I would have to choose the Intel card. When I asked why, she said it was because there are driver issues with XP for the nVIDIA card and that was why XP was not an option if you select the nVIDIA card. I'm hoping that the previous post is correct in that I can get it to work with XP using a third-party driver (a link would be nice to one by someone who has actually tested it on a T61).
