so as the title says..i recently bought a sager np8268-s with a gtx 880m gpu. Now that gtx 980m is out even before my laptop is like 4 days old..did i waste my money? should i rma it and get a refund and buy the one with maxwell and go through hassle of returning it or should i wait for a gtx 980m with all shaders unlocked (currently 1536) ? i like this laptop. it plays everything i throw at it. so..please let me know what you think.

    Thank you.

    welcome to nbr

only you can answer that one.
did you order directly from sager or one of the many resellers in america.
as its only been 4 days does a return policy incur a 15% restocking fee. me not sure how it works out in america.

yes the 9** reared their heads yesterday but if its anything like in the past there will be lots of people who pre ordered so normally the first batch of cards are already assigned to customers.

i dont think you wasted your money as the 8** are good but wont be as good as the 9**
it totally depends how much more price difference if any there will be with the new 9** cards.

best contact your supplier for advice.

Contact XoticPC. You have a 30 day no questions asked return windows (30 days from date the laptop was shipped to you, not received by you). Just make sure the laptop is in 100% good shape and you will only have to pay for return shipping. They may offer to upgrade the GPU for you, but that's up to you if you just want to return and reorder.

Definitely return the laptop to XoticPC. From what I've read on these forums, they're a good company. They would have known for some time that the 980m's were on the horizon, so may not be surprised to hear back from you. Did you buy at a discount? Many companies were heavily discounting laptops to clear out 880m inventory, so if you got a discount, you should prepare yourself in the event they ask you to pay the difference in price between the discounted 880m and the full price 980m.

no i did not get a discount. i've filled out an RMA form. Waiting for their response now. one more thing that bothers me is that eventually gtx 980m will become the new gtx 680m meaning that they will milk it and finally release a full unlocked gm204. lol.

Really depends on you, just bought mine last month and even if Larry from lpc digital did encourage me to wait for a bit for the 980m, I know my gaming needs will be met by the 880m anyway for the next 3 years. So the additional hassle of sending it back, restocking, waiting and hoping for a non lemon kind of outweighs the pros for me

You should really do yourself a favor and get the 980M while you have the chance... The 880M is the *WORST* video card I've ever owned. I've already had my pair replaced once and the new pair is already acting up to the point I don't even game on my 5k machine anymore because its just a matter of time before it crashes or throttles and starts stuttering.

These cards are Kepler pushed to its limits and with the heat they put out, it seems like they used left over desktop-class scraps that have high performance at low voltage at the expense of high leakage which drives up temps.

The 980M is 50% faster than the 880M and you are thinking about keeping the 880M because this bothers you? Even if nvidia does milk it (likely) why would you want to be stuck with an 880M when you can get the 980M?

I have the 880M because I really needed a new computer when I bought it 6 months ago. If I could have waited for the 980M I would have. I would do the swap if I were in your shoes.

Well guys. Ive cancelled the rma request and decided to keep the gtx 880m . i dont wanna go through the hassle of replacement and wait for another month .i think this should last for a while before anything new arrives.well for my laptop 83c is the highest its gone to with fans on maximum. Well i like this laptop so... Yeah. And i have the np8268-s model. Does anyone think that the fan profiles are ed up? I saw gpu creepin up to 85 and thr fans still wouldnt come on fast. Anyways the gtx 880m handles everything i throw at it ultra details 1080p etc. Lemme know what you guys think about fan profiles.

You are being totally stupid but that's your choice and you have to live with it.

Clevo machines do not have adjustable fan curves. The fan kicks up to around 70-80% or so @ 87C. If you want it up before that, you need to force max fans with FN+1.

Let me spell it out for you: if you get the 980M it'd be one month of waiting for 3 years of happiness, and if you stuck with the 880M it'd be one month of happiness and then 3 years of agony. Seems like an easy choice to me.

Well its the same advice that I would want someone to give me knowing now what we know about the 880M that we didn't know when I bought mine.

    GTX 980M:
It is a lot more powerful
    It runs much cooler
It draw less power = More battery life
    It supports DSR
It have the power to run DSR
It is more future proof than 880M

    GTX 880M
    You saved maybe $100
You didn't have to go through the hassle of sending the notebook back. Energy saved

If I were in your shoes, I would probably return the laptop with the 880m. Sure, it may take a month or so for you to get a new laptop with a 980m, however the technology is over 2 years old and 50+ percent gains will be night and day in terms of their respective performances. If the price difference is out of your budget and you cannot afford the difference in price (which is suspect will not be all that much) then by all means keep your laptop. At least inquire with xotic about the possibility of returning your laptop for an updated version based on the fact the 980m will be future proof (for the time being) and is not a heavily overclocked gk104 from 2012. Also take into consideration the resale value of each laptop if you do decide to sell your laptop in the future. The 880m probably isn't even worth the price you paid for it considering the 980m version is about the same price and is worth significantly more based upon the fact it will outpace the 880m by a wide margin for current and future games .
