regarding laptop vga oc>>>>

hey guys
a simple question

would over clocking the laptop's vga card ((an nvidiaM model or ati mobility)) would it overcome the cards mobility feature??

as when working on the battery laptops with dedicated vga cards tend to operate on lower core and memory frequencies?

will overclocking them destroy that??

and one last note

i know all about those heating issues and why some people dont recommend oc the laptop vga
but have u considred a laptop cooler??
it's really dirt cheap guys!

Well if you want to put it that way OCing requires more power and drains the battery faster so it does somewhat remove the mobility.
Also,it shortens the lifespan of the component in question,and can sometimes lead to a laptop overheating. Or bricking.
If the powermizer or powerplay options are set up though,while on battery the gpu and cpu will probably run at 1/2 the power they USUALLY run,not the OCed way.
Good laptop coolers are the Zalman NC1000 and the NC2000.

it either does or doesn't
am not gonna play games on battery of course
the vga of almost all laptops work in 2 modes
1) battery saving mode (on low frequency)
2) full mode when connected to socket (full power/freq.)
and that is done automatically
but my question is if u oc the graphics for example and u know that when u oc u MANUALLY set the new FREQUENCY
will that new higher FREQUENCY remain and not change even when i work on the battery (((hence the mobility is f**ked))) or simply not?

As I said, if you have Powermizer or PowerPlay enabled,you still have the mobility.
I was only taking into accoung OCing while on battery ,but since you aren`t you`re fine. Mobility stays

 

so powerplay or the other one is actually a tool or software??

 

PowerPlay is ATI`s way of maximizing battery,
Powermizer is NVIDIA`s

 

1 last question please just to get it straight
i thought mobility something in the vga itself
such as the mobile processors
any modification in them would kill the mobility

so ur saying that's not right, correct?

and both powerplay and powermiser will still function CORRECTLY and decrease the card's frequencies when working on a battery, EVEN AFTER OC

Well, by mobility I mean the possibility to carry it and use it without an outlet around.
The term "mobility" is used by ati to define their laptop version GPUs, like nvidia uses "go" or lately, "m" .
If you mean portability,well,that is pretty much the same thing : being able to carry your laptop everywhere and still have a good battery life.
Modifications don`t always lead to disaster if the temps are within the boundries,you clean the laptop from dust,use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound,maybe a notebook cooler if you game for extended periods of time or OC ,etc.
Both powerplay and powermizer,if supported properly by the driver(mind you,some nvidia drivers lack powermizer because their desktop drivers,which don`t require MOBILITY ) do that.
One other thing you could do to replace these software is using Notebook Hardware Control, it also downclocks the gpu and cpu to give a better battery life.
Don`t worry about any question you might have, shoot.
We all were beginners once,and it`s best to be informed.

i was just asking coz b4 i was attempting to oc the x300 i have (as expirement) but it almost lead to a disaster
the entire laptop's screen was FILLED with artifacts
actually i couldn't see a single item on the desktop :S
and i freaked out so right away i shutdown the laptop and start it again
hope that doesn't happen again !
and where exactly do i put the "Arctic Silver 5" on??
the processor maybe?

 

Now. It`s best if you don`t apply it yourself if it`s the first time,since it`s easy to mess up.
Either read the tutorials on the net, or ask a laptop service firm to help you.
