I used to run my bf2142 under 1280x1024, as it was the highest resolution I could chose. But I managed to change the resolution by somebody's help today. what surprised me is that the game actually boost from 70fps to 90fps under WUXGA. Any idea how that happened? all the settings are high

Same, I get more fps in games with my native res, especially BF2. It's because it takes the computer more work to downscale the resolution to a standard res (if your screen is wide). So, usually you should just play at your native res, or the scale resolution (my res is 1280x800, and 16:10 scale)

    ya same for me.

i play CS Source on full @ 40-50 fps on my 6100

    but on 800X600 i get 30 fps.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with scaling DOWN from the native res. of your screen, so the graphics card is working harder if you change it; with higher end cards, especially in SLi (I realize you don't have SLi), WUXGA often gives better framerates.

Edit: I realize this is off topic, but I see you go to NYU; what year are you?

For widescreens, you can use standard resolutions with no performance decrease if you can deal with the black bars on the side.

Theres so much wrong in this thread, I don't think I even want to start.

However, the game is pretty old, so its likely being limited by the CPU. Or, while the resolution was increased, the detail quality was reduced, thus increasing the frame rate.

Umm, yeah, that is so wrong. The aspect ration won't affect performance. Usually, running at native will make things run worse, EXCEPT when the GPU is too fast for that game/resolution. BF2142 is an old game. the 8800m GTX is way powerful. Thus, at 1280x1024, it becomse CPU bound. Yes, it's the CPU limiting the performance.

So how that explains that the game runs better at a higher resolution? I'm kind of confused.

    Thanks beforehand.

The Gpu is faster than the CPU for games. And the GPU is too fast at that resolution on that game. Thus limiting performance.

someone care to give a professional opinion on the topic? does downscaling reduce performance?

no but scaling video game resolution to monitor resolution aka 800x600 > 1440x900 is a tad more cumbersome than scaling from 800x600 to 1152x864 (I think)

not sure how noticable that would be...

Downscaling your resolution doesn't necessarily reduce performance. It just causes the performance of the game to become CPU bound. In other words, the CPU will likely become more a bottleneck than the GPU. I do notice on laptop drivers, my games run slower on a lower resolution. This is more likely a software conflict than a hardware conflict. I don't really care to find out the problem as I don't feel the time and effort is worth it when my performance at native resolution runs just fine.

Looking at the OP's laptop, I highly doubt the CPU will become much of a bottleneck on 2142. The GPU will become more of a factor at 1280x1024

exuse me noobs, there is a wide screen command so you can run at native res. you just have to know how to do it. if anyone wants me to school them i will.

Sorry to post again with the same question: could anyone explain clearly why does this happen? (a greater resolution gives faster fps)

I mean, you can go over the web to look for performance charts and I find that a greater resolution reduces the fps you get.

I do get the point of being CPU bound, but that does not explain (or I don't see clearly) how that goes into reducing the fps in a game.

    Thanks beforehand.
