    On the powernotebooks site it says "X1600 w/up to 512MB" for the z/s96j. Does that mean it will be 256 dedicated with 256 hypermem?

    No, it will only take the extra 256mb if it is needed. Usually 256mb dedicated on your card is enough.

    Well what do you mean by it will onyl take it if its needed? Wouldnt that be like hypermemory?

    Yes its hypermemory. 256mb dedicated to the card, and then the card can take 256mb from the system memory if it needs it.
