ok.. I have the nc8430... and when I start gaming it usually stays about about 70 degrees for fear.. 55 degrees for say conquer online or listening to alot of music videos..what is generally a safe temp.. after 15-30 minutes it may spike up to 80 and I get a warning.. I am using NHC to moniter the temp.. anything recommendations on what to do? other then cooling pad... i'm trying to get one right now..

Try and clean out any Vents, and make sure that when you use the notebook, that none of the intake vents are blocked. Use compressed ari to clean the vents out. It is very effective, and a quick process. Hope this helps.

You will just need to get a cool pad. My laptop gets warm when I game too. However there isn't much you can do. Do you have NHC set to Dynamic or Max? I notice a little improvement temperature wise when it is set to Dynamic.

Another thing you could do while waiting is to prop up your notebook so some air can get to the vents below.

I think a good temp is somewhere around 50C.

Yeah then all you can really do right now is put a book or something under you laptop to prop it up. As long as your laptop doesn't shut off you should be okay. Just make sure you use the cooling pad everytime you game once you get it.

you just said around 50 was good... so I fail to see how 80 is safe..

That is quite odd. I'm overclocking and I don't hit 55. Hell, I think my temps are like 45, or less.

I'd return the thing sadly :(

It's not supposed to be going up to 80, even without a heating pad. My x1800, one of the hottest cards, would go up to 65 AT MOST when gaming before getting a cooling pad, and now it hardly heats up at all...

If it heats up badly now, it's gonna be like this always...

Before you do though, check a few other programs. Could that program be off by some amount of degrees?

EDIT: I'm not totally sure on these temps, but even before getting a heating pad, the thing wasn't that hot to begin with. It only got super hot just once, when defragging. Now it hardly has any heat to begin with. I really should check temps, but idle temps are like 35c (last I looked, in bios), so I'm guessing my gaming temps are 45c...

Could NHC be faulty? my temp stays at about 55 (celsius) according to the NHC.. and hits spikes of 70 regularly..

    Try another program.

Also, does the notebook feel really, really hot? I mean, like burning to touch? It would if it got to 80/70c alot.

Hum, I just noticed some people get up to 100c ?????

Do people usually go to higher temps in the notebook world?

    How do notebooks stay running?

And how did, by some magic, I keep my notebook running so well?

Usually we try to stay at around 40c in the desktop world :-X

Can someone else chime in about this?

Hitting 80c under a heavy load is not unsafe for most video cards. Most of the Nvidia line dont hit core slowdown threshold til 110c. Even from Nvidia forums as long as it doesnt go red youre fine. Its expected to heat up especially under a load.

Cpu's don't take damage till about 100c and gpu's are a little tougher than cpu's. 80c is nothing to worry about.

NHC only handles HDD and CPU temps.... not GPU temps...right??

I use RivaTuner for my GPU temps, it idles at 55-60 C degrees and i top out at 94 C degrees when gaming for a long time. But I live in Southern California, so the temps are about 8-10 degrees higher than other locations. I use a notebook cooler, and toggle my fans to max speed when I game.

Right; NHC does not monitor GPU temperatures as far as I know. It does, however, monitor ATI video card clocks. See attached.

NHC does not read the 8430's temps correctly, try Coretemp

Also, you say you have NHC set to dynamic switching, but you didn't mention that you under volted your CPU...
    undervolting = lower temps.

You could use a CD case to put you notebook over your desk to allow more air ...
