should I buy one with 8600 GT now or wait for a 15.4 laptop with better gaming performance?

15.4 is the right size for me. but people are saying 8600GT is the best graphic card for this size right now and it will be so for a while. How long is this 'a while'
should I wait for it? people say the 8600GT gaming performance is just so so. what kind of card will be in a 15.4 laptop in the near future?

    Thanks

uhh.. u can get the 8700gt in a 15.4" as of rite now i believe. However, many ppl here seem to think the 8800 is where there will be a big jump, but thats not out till around christmas. im going with the 8700 cuz i need for college :/ if you can wait, why not.

EDIT: just noticed you posted this in two sections... try not to do that... not rele looked well upon

EDIT:written after the ppl below me, but yea, i thought the toshiba was 15", sorry cant fit :/

As far as I know, the 8700GT is only available to get in the 17" toshiba right now... Compal IFL90 and Sager 2090 appear to have an MXMII slot and a 8600GT card, which means that future upgrades might be possible (with hearing that the 8800 card might have a 22watt requirement, which fits with MXMII) but it is not for sure. If you need the laptop now, get one now or you'll be waiting forever. If you have a computer that works and fits you now, you can wait it out as something better will always come soon.

Get it if u really need it... and no, u CANNOT get 8700M GT in a 15.4" form... it just doesn't fit in that small space. In the near future, there ll be ATI HD 2600XT and possibly the Nvidia 8800M (which i seriously doubt). What type of machine do you currently have?

the 8600m gt is going to be the best 15" mobile card for a long time. whenever they release the 9600m gt. its quite a ways off. possibly a year? hard to say. if you wait the full year for the 9600m gt, the 10600m gt will be a similar wait.

    ie.

you will end up never getting a laptop.

8600m gt is a great card for a 15" laptop. it was just recently released. its fine to get it now, but here is the rule of computer equiptment:

buy your laptop when you need it. no sooner, no later. same rule applies to desktops.

    Thanks.
To answer lunateck, my current one is dell inspiron 6000.
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) M
    processor 1.86GHz, 781 MHz
    1G RAM
    ati x300

I've used it for 2 years, it's actually working fine right now, for most tasks I do. But sometimes it's slow for multiple tasks, and the gaming sucks. can't play any new game. I remember when I tried to install one game, the game simply said your computer was 2 years behind, it couldn't be installed ... well maybe that's good for me....

also I need to do video editing, now I do it in the editing room, but i need to work at home sometimes. will a laptop with 86600GT like Sager 2090 be fine for this? does the new processor (e.g. T7300, 2.0GHz) perform much faster than my current laptop?

I won't post twice again. sorry.

With me thats the law. It allows me to banish the thoughts of "If I had just waited a few more months then...."

No point waiting for price drops either. You may wait 2 months for a $100 drop in price, but then you could have been using the laptop 2 months earlier, and now you have technology that is slightly older.

Well the 2600xt might be better but your going to have to wait until mid-august for the benchmarks to come in.

I think 8600gt is the best perfomance you are going to get in a 15 incher. I might be wrong but I think the 8700m puts out too much heat or draws too much power for that form factor. I think its only going in 17inchers. oops..realized someone above already mentioned this stuff..lol my bad for not reading!

when the hd 2600 xt comes out, you will have that choice available at the 15" level, but its not much of a choice really. both should perform about the same. a little better for one here or the other there from game to game, but no biggie.

I say get one which you can upgrade the graphics card in (i.e. ASUS C90S). That would mean that you can get it right now, and have the safety blanket of knowing that you can upgrade it later on.

or just wait, if you think you can get by with your current laptop. like the saying "if it aint broke, dont fix it", in this situtuation the saying is "if its doin what you need, dont replace it"

    just my opinion.

i'm going by this too, my laptop in my sig is doing what i need it to(except gaming). :)

haven't heard that 2090 with 8600gt is upgradeable.

choosing a laptop is such a pain.

Yeh, agree with most people here. You can carry on waiting forever for your 'dream' laptop, like I did. I waited 9 months for Dx10 compatible video cards to be released and currently, I still haven't got my laptop, although it should be here next week :D .
Technology comes out all the time. Todays news is that Intel will be selling new processors by Q2 next year lol and the new Windows is already in production.

Just get an 8600 GT, it'll probably be the best you can get for a 15" .

Don't count on easy upgradability. Even when it's MXM, it's gonna be har to upgrade, hard to get a hold on cards and quite expensive. MXM is mainly for the ease of the manufacturer/OEM. You don't get a lappy for upgradeabiility, that's what a desktop is for.

I completely agree, the waiting game is pointless to engage in for the most part, if you need it, get it, I got a ridiculous deal on my M1210, I looked in the outlet the other day and still cant find one that beats it, and I got mine last october, that said, I wouldnt be kicking myself if I could have saved a little more a week later, do your research, find a deal you feel is fair, and let it be.

Exactly! You do not get a laptop to upgrade it. That becomes difficult and very expensive. Get a laptop for mobility and a desktop for gaming. Or, just get a 15.4 laptop like the MBP and do both....not hardcore gaming though.

    I agree totally... Thanks

It seems that 2090 NP only has a matte screen for WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)..
