what gaming notebooks have a slot loading disc drive apart from the m15x?
and on a related subject, when will the m15x's successor come out?
-
I believe the new M17x, and Dell Studio XPS have slot loading drives.
-
Any notebook (I repeat... ANY NOTEBOOK) can get it as long as it supports a standard optical drive connector (IDE or SATA).
I have two slot load drives collecting dust... of which I have put into my notebook.
they are NOT something special at all... just another standard optical drive you can purchase almost in any online store.
example.... for Newegg: Pioneer 8X DVD-RW Slot Load
its just a standard slim optical drive that can be used in any notebook (all of the custom gaming notebooks will be able to use these, regardless of "brand")
P.S. you are talking to a guy that has one of the only notebook models in the world with dual optical drives (and dual HDDs simultaneously)... so make no mistake, I have tried a number of different drives in my system.
... slot load drives are MEH... nothing special... crappy when they act up as compared to tray type drives which you can still deal with. -
i didnt know that
i wish there was a guide on how to do it, though id don't need it now (later when i buy a laptop with a disc drive.......im stuck with my netbook for now)
by the way, why do you need 2 disc drives? a picture would be interesting

I disagree. You may be able to install it and get it to work but faceplate issue will break the deal. If you have a custom face plate for your optical drive, it will look ugly with this standard drive.
-
Most lappys don't have custom faceplates though, becuase those cost extra, and they aren't going to spend an extra 15 bucks on a custom faceplate plus the labor to switch the face plate out on most machines. Chances are you will be able to find a drive with a faceplate that matches the finish of your notebook aftermarket, no custom needed.
-
slot loading looks much cooler though than the traditional disc drive.Do you think this could work on my laptop?
-
most User's Manuals on these custom gaming notebook will show you how to remove and replace the optical drive.
.... it usually involves 1 screw on to do it (for most of the notebooks that I have dealt with).
heres a pic of a Clevo D900K dual optical drives:
the bezel of the optical drive could be different from system to system... but it will still fit with the stock one... you can just get another bezel to replace it later on for aesthetic purposes.
.Dell notebooks are infamous for never using standard optical drives... they usually use proprietary ones that have specifically different connectors. -
Do you mean a smart bay drive like the m15x or a slot load ODD as opposed to a tray loading ODD? Because the m15x uses a tray loading ODD.
The new M17x uses a slot load. -
The last four Dells I've worked on use standard SATA or IDE connections for the optical drives, including a Studio 1555, Studio 1535, XPS M1530, and Latitude E6400.
-
This might not be what you're asking, but I've had nothing but bad experiences with the reliability of slot-loading drives in laptops
-
What are the most common issues with slot loads over tray loads? I've never had a slot load in my notebook, but most of my car radios are slot load and never had an issue. Seems like slot load would be cheaper because of fewer parts.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Unless the drive mounts with support on top, sides and more importantly BOTTOM, the plates tend to snap off and are *very* flimsy. My daughter has a Sony slot loading in her 1722 and she just uses it without the faceplate because it is very weak and flimsy and the slightest pull or touch pulls it off every time even just moving the notebook.
So if your notebook uses a bezel that curves and occupies a piece of the bottom of the chassis, the slot loading drive is not a good idea. -
thats good to know.
I hated dealing with optical drive replacements with the previous Dells -
sorry, thought it was slot loading! the line looked like a slot loader
but i don't mind anyway, i cant afford one
but if i could id run into those build quality problems everyone complains about, so...
slot loading gaming notebook?
