Do yourself a favour and buy command and conquer : the first decade, it's the single greatest purchase one can make for under 50 Euro.

Oooo I love Tiberan Sun. Red Alert was great as well. There was another one with better graphics. Does anyone remember the name of it?

You're damn right I do, that's C&C : Generals, probably my least favourite but still pretty decent. The first one is some game, pretty ancient at this stage but the production quality is outstanding, beats most films in my opinion. Seriously, it's a really good buy. I still haven't played through everything and I'm a huge C&C fan.

Also if you already have Oblivion, The prequel, Morrowind is amazing, maybe even a better game than Oblivion.

(EDIT) Oops, stole my thunder... C&C Generals was great to me. Hard to argue w/ C&C: The First Decade, great collection! RA2 was my favorite out of that bunch.

To OP, I'd add Supreme Commander. And Spellforce 2 if you like an incredible RTS & RPG hybrid. And Jade Empire. And of course Oblivion.

(EDIT to include another amazing collection) How could I forget: Warhammer: Dawn of War Platinum! Excellent RTS with 7 races and it includes all expansions!

Haven't really given Generals a chance to be honest, when I get my new M1710 though I'll fire it up again.

What is supreme commander like? I remember seeing a trailer for it and it looked bad-assed.

Excellent decision to give Generals a chance, it really is quite good... but then again most C&C games are.

I've played Supreme Commander a little bit w/ a friend but don't have my own copy yet (waiting for my damn Dell), but it is a MUST own for RTS fans. Holy hell, the variety of units, graphics, and absolute reign of destruction is like nothing before it. It's Total Annihilation 2, really (on steroids). And those new Commander units...

Excellent. That's good enough for me, I'm a huge RTS fan but haven't been up to date thanks to my thinkpad slowing things down considerably.

Anyone play a game called Battlezone 3D I think it was called, or Battlezone 2? Totally underrated games, thought they were brilliant myself. Bit aged by now though I'd say.

df3n5: RTS's are so fun, my genre along with RPG's. Your faves? (not really a thread hijack, as we're still giving suggestions to OP as well!) I'll give my top 10 favorites of all-time - no one can go wrong with any of these:

    1. Starcraft, 2. Warlords Battlecry II, 3. MechCommander II, 4. C&C: Red Alert II, 5. Rise of Nations, 6. Spellforce II, 7. Warhammer: Dawn of War, 8. Supreme Commander, 9. Warcraft III, 10. Age of Mythology

I haven't played Company of Heroes, but it's gotten really great reviews.

RTSs and RPGs are great my top ten would be :

    1. C&C
    2. C&C : Tiberian Sun
    3. Shogun : Total War
    4. Commandos - Behind Enemy Lines
    5. Starcraft
    6. Battlezone (Kind of an RTS/FPS/Tank game but a lot of RTS in there)
    7. C&C : Red Alert
    8. C&C : Red Alert 2
    9. Commandos 3
    10. Medieval : Total War

What's that Warlords Battlecry 2 game? Never heard of that. Is it oldish?

df3n5: All hardcore RTS fans MUST PLAY the Warlords Battlecry series (at least #2) - I rate it as the most underrated game series of all-time and it produced what I believe is the first true RTS/RPG hybrid. Many haven't heard of them which stinks... A number of things in WC3 were actually in WBC2 first: heroes w/ items and experience/skills (MUCH more advanced than WC3), quests, merchants, mercenaries... WBCs 1-3 came out from 2000-2004 (Warlords series was the turn-based version if you've heard of that). They're working on #4 now!

What's so great? 10+ races, each with some distinct units, getting to level up the heroes, the quests, and just a very solid RTS experience. WBC1 has a pretty good storyline, WBC2 is like a Risk-style map (think Rise of Nations), and WBC3 is a mix (w/ about 17-18 different races!). WBC2 is the one to go with (PC Gamer quietly gave it 90% - not much fanfare).

To answer your earlier question, I played Battlezone some - great ideas and very innovative, it just didn't quite hold enough interest for me.

Good list - big C&C fan eh! I loved them all... just goes to show how much more I love the ones in my top 10!

Interesting all this CnC talk and no one is talking about the new CnC3? Has anyone played or own it now? I'm considering it at some point.

Supreme Commander sounds like a solid choice.

Also in the turn based area, I'd recommend any Total War game, especially for a deep single-player experience. Rome: Total War is one of my real favorites (with expansion also).

Shooters: GEARS OF WAR is amazong on the 360 and that arrives on the PC in November. Lot of top level games coming out.

World in Conflict? I think that's a shooter yea? Should be a big one.

Yeah I love my C&C, more the universe rather than anything else, I love the storyline and the feel to the games though sometimes they aren't as balanced as the Starcraft and Warcraft games or as well rounded. Still haven't played Tiberian Wars though, it's Number 1 on my to-do list when I get my M1710.

That actually does sound like a really good idea for a game, especially an RTS. I just looked it up there on GAME.co.uk and it doesn't look like they have any of them, I hate when you can't find those gems of games. Grr. Probably try and find it somewhere online.

I liked the idea of Battlezone a lot, being in the frontline while commanding your troops in a 3D FPS kind of way, building a base, never seen it done so nicely before.

What's Company of Heroes about? Heard a lot of talk about it around, is it like an updated commandos?

nope, its rts but your units are in squads, its a thq game, similar to warhammer in terms of resources a aquired by holding strategic points.

I highly reccomend it. have a play of the demo. you'll be hooked.

I'll give the demo a go alright, sounds interesting. Oh a game I nearly forgot to mention is Z! Now there's a blast from the past! That's an RTS for the people who want old-school intense action that will make your heart almost explode you are so tense. Well maybe a bit overdramatic buts it's a definate classic in my books, along with C&C and Starcraft.
